There is a silent health crisis in America... on average, American men live sicker and die younger than American women," according to Dr. David Gremillion of Men's Health Network.
During the month of June, Fetter Health Care Network is recognizing Men's Health Month because every day we care for Fathers, Sons, Husbands, Nephews and Grandfathers who have delayed routine preventive health and wellness visits or have suffered in silence rather than address a variety of ailments.
We think it is unacceptable that:
- Men are dying an average of 5 years younger than women and lead 9 out of 10 of the top causes of death.
- Men are at greater risk for death in every age group. More males than females are born (105 vs 100), but by age 35, women outnumber men.
- Men have a higher suicide death rate than women. Men account for 92% of fatal workplace injuries.
- Men do not see physicians for a physical exam nearly as often as women and men are more likely to be uninsured than women.
We are asking our Mothers, Wives, Sisters, Daughters, Nieces and Grandmothers to join Fetter Health Care Network and encourage the Men in our lives to take proactive steps to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
The week prior to Father's Day is recognized as International Men's Health Week. Let's wear the color Blue during the week of June 15th - 19th, 2015, to honor the men in our lives and to encourage a healthy lifestyle.

Fetter brings Healthcare to the Homeless under the Bridge
On Saturday, May 16, 2015, Fetter Health Care Network provided homeless and displaced families with heath care services under the Ravenel Bridge. Working in conjunction with the "bridge church", Ms. Dolores Greene, social worker, Nurse Laevate Nelson and Nurse Gwen Turbinton accompanied outreach workers to a tent city located under the bridge.
Rev. Thomas Clayton and Marlon Smalls are outreach workers contracted by Fetter to identify the homeless population and refer them to Fetter for health care and social work support services. Rev. Clayton is the pastor of World Harvest Community Church and his church sponsors the "bridge church."
Nurse Nelson, Nurse Turbinton and Dolores Greene spoke with the service population about Fetter services and distributed toiletries. They also spoke with the women and provided information about Fetter's Best Chance Network which provides free screening (Clinical Breast Exam, Pelvic Exam, Pap smear, & Mammogram) for women 40-64 years of age who do not have health insurance and meet annual income guidelines.
Services provided by Fetter during the "bridge church" were:
- Health Screening: Nurses checked Blood Pressure
- Bag of toiletries given to each participant
- A meal is provided by the bridge church to the participants after the health screening.
- A Social Worker explained services provided by Fetter to the Homeless population including:
- An examination by a physician at no cost to the patient.
- Prescriptions written by Fetter physicians (up to a specific amount) are filled at no cost to the patient.
