Opinion: The Space-based Future of ADS-B
Barry Aylward of Canadian-based Kitchener Aero recently weighed in on the topic of space-based ADS-B in the most recent issue of Avionics. News. According to Aylward, "It is becoming increasingly clear that the future of ADS-B will be space-based -- satellite monitoring as opposed to a massive installed ground network. In fact, I suggest that we have likely seen the last big ADS-B ground infrastructure play in the world ... There is a strong possibility that virtually every GA aircraft currently being equipped for compliance with the FAA mandate will not be compliant with future Canadian and other international ADS-B mandates! Consider this for a minute: We could be dealing with a second round of ADS-B equipage for international mandates just as the sun sets on the U.S. mandate -- and with a lot of unhappy customers!"  More...

FAA Publishes Guidance on MAG 5
The Federal Aviation Administration has published Notice N 8900.336 addressing the U.S./EU Maintenance Annex Guidance, Change 5 requirements for the FAA Form 8130-3 from production approval holder. On Sept. 9, 2015, the MAG, Change 5, was signed. Generally, FAA-certificated air agencies holding EASA certification must comply with the requirements of a revision within 90 days of the effective date (implementation date Dec. 8, 2015). Change 5 of the MAG introduced a change to Section B, Appendix 1. The amendment to that section reinforces (and in many cases, established) the requirement that U.S.-based repair stations receive FAA Form 8130-3 for all new parts that will be installed in articles for which a dual release is to be issued.   More...

Testing the Market: Jupiter Avionics Offers the DO-160 Gauntlet
To earn certification from an aviation authority such as the Federal Aviation Administration, Transport Canada or the European Aviation Safety Agency, avionics equipment must run the environmental gauntlet prescribed by RTCA DO-160, Environmental Conditions and Test Procedures for Airborne Equipment. When it was first published in 1975, according to Scott Moore, project manager and environmental testing manager at Jupiter Avionics, DO-160 specified the order in which the tests must be conducted. The test item had to endure the shock and vibration tests before it began the humidity evaluation, "the idea being that the preceding tests made the test unit more susceptible to the one that followed," he said.  More...

Avionica Masters Data
Flight data provides critical information for airlines and many business aircraft operators.
