Price Families,

We are excited to offer you a monthly newsletter with information about upcoming events and other news at Price Elementary. The Price Parent Newsletter will be electronically distributed during the first week of every month.
Principals'  Post

The holiday season has begun, and our hope is that your family is enjoying this special time of year in every way.  Along with the holidays, December brings cold weather.  It is important that each student has a coat at school each day in order to stay warm when we go outside for recess.  It is also critical that your child's name is written on the inside of his/her coat so we can return it to the right owner if it is lost.  Lost coats without names inside them are placed in our lost and found and oftentimes are never claimed.  If your child is in need of a warm coat for winter, please feel free to contact your child's teacher, the office, or Nurse Amy, and we would be happy to help you.

All parents have received information recently regarding a district-wide survey that will help each building gather feedback on our procedures and systems and help us make plans for the future.  As of Wednesday, only 20% of Price parents have completed this survey.  We would like to offer a personal invitation to you, and request your help in gathering feedback.  The survey should take approximately 10 minutes and will close this Friday.   The input you provide will help us make adjustments and decisions that will impact your child's educational experience within our school building. Thank you in advance for your time!

You may complete this survey by clicking here.

We wanted to take a moment to thank you for the support you provided last year in helping our district adopt Early Release Fridays.  When your child leaves school at 2:30 each Friday, Price teachers meet together in grade level teams to discuss achievement data and make plans to continue supporting students in their learning.  Just like our kindergarten team (pictured below), all Price teachers focus on answering these questions:

What do we expect our students to learn?
How will we know they have learned it?
How will we respond when they don't learn it?
How will we respond if they already know it?

Price teachers consistently report that this hour of collaboration is helping our grade level teams to be more intentional in how they approach teaching and learning.
We hope to see many of you on Saturday at the Price Holiday Market, and if we don't see you before then, have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Your partners in education,
Mr. Brown & Mrs. Ipock
Counselors' Corner

K-2 Counseling
As we begin the month of December, Price kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade will be learning about careers.  We will discuss different career options and what students might want to be when they grow up.   Students will listen to stories of people in various jobs and will participate in different team building activities.

3-5 Counseling
During the month of December our classroom lessons are focused on careers. Students will have a chance to explore career options and the steps needed to reach their ultimate career goals.

The VOICE
A career simulation called Vocational Opportunities Inspiring Children in Elementary (VOICE) will join us at Price Elementary on  December 22nd from  9 am to 12pm. Grades 2-5 will participate in this opportunity to help our students with career awareness and aspirations.   Continued r esearch has shown that children who complete an elementary-based career awareness program have higher grades and academic achievement, increased school involvement, and an increase in career awareness exploration, personal, and interpersonal skills. Click HERE if you would like more information on this exciting program.
Student Achievement Recognition

The Price Student Showcase board is used to feature student achievement and special celebrations.  We are very proud of the hard work our students have done to improve in so many areas!  This month we would like to feature Price fourth graders who have made outstanding improvements! Mrs. Davis reported that her entire class showed reading level improvement.  Ms. Parker's class surpassed their math test goal by averaging greater than 80% on their last test! Mrs. Gove's class celebrated writing success by moving from 20% proficiency in using good beginnings in their writing to 72% proficiency!  Each class celebrates their achievements in special ways.  Mrs. Gove's class took a break to play a fun class game of Detective (pictured below).  Congratulations to all of our Price students for showing perseverance and determination in academics!
Price Schoolwide Title I & Literacy

Have you heard of the four gift rule for the holidays?   Don't forget to include that fourth gift of something new to read!  If you're not sure what your child might like to read, you can always try the Scholastic Parent Store.  Scholastic provides great reading options for kids of all ages and at great prices, too!  Still lost?  Try a cool nonfiction book about a science or history topic your child thinks is really interesting!

Building Improvement Plan Progress

One of the improvement goals we focus on each month at Price is attendance.  Our goal is that the average attendance would be 95.8% or higher.  For the month of November, Price was just over 1/2 a percentage point under this goal.  The majority of student absences this past month were due to sickness.  As a school, we are diligently working to keep our building clean and as germ-free as possible by sanitizing frequently used surfaces like desks, doorknobs, and water fountains multiple times a day.  You can help at home by reviewing good handwashing skills with your child and practicing the right way to cover a sneeze or cough to keep from spreading germs. Although it may sound counterproductive to increasing our attendance numbers, it is also important to keep your child home if he/she has a fever or has been throwing up in order to prevent the unnecessary spread of germs.  Thank you for helping us keep our students healthy!  Congratulations to Price 2nd and 4th grade levels who did meet our building attendance goal in November!  And a big pat on the back to the 191 Price students who were able to keep perfect attendance during November!

The other two school improvement goals we focus on at Price are literacy
and numeracy goals.  These goals guide teachers in assessing specific writing and math skills, planning intentional lessons to teach and reteach low areas, and check for student understanding on a regular basis.  As teachers work through assessment data to track student progress, they record successes in their classrooms on a data wall like the one featured below from Mrs. White's 3rd grade class.  Teachers also report this progress data regularly in classroom newsletters.  As always, if you have questions regarding your child's progress, please feel free to contact your child's teacher at any time.

Specials Class Updates

Congratulations, Step Club!
During October and November, more than 50 Price students participated in Coach Dishman's Step Club.  This club met every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 7:15-8:00 in the Price gymnasium.  Students used pedometers to track their steps while walking or jogging.  This was a great opportunity for our students to get more exercise!   For the month of November, our Step Club Students of the Month were:

5th Grade - Ethan Meyer with 20,102 steps
4th Grade - Jeb Shumaker with 18,406 steps
3rd Grade - Eiljah Kennard with 18,749 steps
2nd Grade - Mason Hartsock with 17,971 steps

Step club will start back up Tuesday, January 5th, and we hope to continue to grow this club so that our students can continue to practice healthy habits. For more information on Step Club, click HERE to email Coach Dishman.  Don't forget, you can be looking for Run Club information this spring to get ready for the annual 5K!

Art
5th grade has finished their Vincent Van Gogh inspired landscapes. They are now starting a unit on origami and radial symmetry. We are learning basic origami folds and creating a relief sculpture using the math objective of radial symmetry.   4th grade has been working on their Mexican Dia de los Muertos Sugar Skulls and will start a lesson on The Grinch and figurative language before Christmas break.   3rd grade is creating German inspired Cuckoo Clocks. This lesson involves painted texture, history and culture, paper weaving and collage.   2nd grade is creating optical illusions with 2-dimensional geometric and organic shapes. Next, we are creating a winter bird collage inspired by Lois Ehlert's book, Snowballs.   1st grade created folded friendly fish/piranha art. They got to experiment with several different art supplies to see how they worked together and ask critical thinking questions like an artist!  Next, we will create painted collage snowmen inspired by Caralyn Buehner's book Snowmen at Night and Lois Ehlert's book Snowballs.   Kindergarten students created 2-dimensional shape art.  They discovered how different shapes can be put together to create animals and objects.  We practiced drawing several 2-dimensional shapes and discussed shapes' properties.  They experimented with several different art supplies to see how they worked together and asked critical thinking questions like an artist.  We are creating paint swatch snowmen collages next and will also read Snowmen at Night and Snowballs
PBIS Semester Celebration

The purpose of the PBIS program is to teach and encourage positive behavior.  One way we do this is through our student signature lanyards.  Students have the opportunity to earn signatures throughout the year by making positive behavior choices.  Students can trade in signatures for smaller rewards or save up to redeem for larger rewards.  This month students who have saved 100 signatures can choose to participate in a Christmas Campout Signature Celebration.  During this celebration, students will enjoy grilled hot dogs, a special ice cream treat, and a Christmas movie.  We are excited to celebrate positive choices with these students!
