Holy Week Begins
Holy Week begins on Sunday with Palm Sunday.  This is the time we set aside time to tell the story of the Jesus, especially his suffering and death, setting the stage for the celebration of the resurrection a week from Sunday.  It is the part of the story many of us would rather not have to think about, but is very important.  To help us do that we have two special worship services...they have strange names: Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

Our best guess as to what "Maundy" means is that it comes from the latin word "mandatum" meaning commandment, referring to Jesus giving his disciples a new commandment: to love one another each the way that Jesus loved them.  At this service we will focus on the events of the last week of Jesus' life, picking up after the triumphal entry with palms and culminating with Jesus sharing a meal the night before he was betrayed.

The next day (Good Friday) we will gather again to continue the story, picking up with the arrest, trial and crucifixion of Jesus.  I remember being confused as a kid as to why we would call this day "good".  It seemed to me to be the opposite of good.  Actually here the word "good" is derived from "God" in the same way that "good-bye" came from "God be with ye".  So it is "God's Friday", focused on the purpose of the incarnation of God among us, to redeem and save.

There won't be a lot of preaching at either of these services.  They will focus on the story (this year from the gospel of Luke. especially chapters 22-23) along with music and images that will bring us into the story.  If you are travelling this week with spring break and can't be with us, I invite you to pack a Bible or Bible storybook to be able to enter into the story wherever you are.
