Rutgers/Stanford Collaborate on New Parkinson's Technology
Scientists at Rutgers and Stanford universities have created a new technology that could someday help treat Parkinson's disease and other devastating brain-related conditions that affect millions of people.  The technology involves converting adult tissue-derived stem cells into human neurons on 3-D "scaffolds," or tiny islands of fibers, according to  Prabhas V. Moghe, a distinguished professor in the departments of Biomedical Engineering and Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at Rutgers University.  To find out more about this exciting new technology, read here.

Beacons of Light: The Black Student Protest Legacy at RU-Camden

When Roy Jones CCAS '70 enrolled at Rutgers University-Camden (RU-C) in the late 1960s, he looked around and was discouraged by what he saw. There were very few African American students like him on campus, he thought, while other ethnic minorities were even less represented, in stark contrast to the demographics of the surrounding Camden community.  What followed was a tumultuous but momentous period of student protest and desegregation efforts at Rutgers and in the surrounding areas. More than 40 years later, RU-C will commemorate this vital turning point in its history with a full day of panels and discussions, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 30.  Olympic gold medalist and activist John Carlos, best known for his Black Power salute on the podium at the 1968 Olympics, will conclude the day's discussions with a closing address. RU-Newark: Legislative Open House On Telemedicine/Urban Healthcare
Reflecting its anchor institution mission to engage cross-sector partners in addressing the great challenges of our time, Rutgers University-Newark (RU-N) will host its second Legislative Open House, "Telemedicine and Urban Healthcare," on Monday, April 4, 8-10:30 a.m., in Bove Auditorium at Rutgers Business School. Telemedicine is the use of telecommunication (smartphones) and information technology (laptops and tablets) to provide clinical health care remotely. It helps remove distance barriers and can improve access to medical services that otherwise would not be readily available in distant or disenfranchised communities.  To find out more about this important event, click here.
