A Message from Council Member
Pete Meitzner...
I hope this newsletter finds you enjoying the "spring break" season, especially if you have school-age children.   March madness is in full swing, with our Shockers and Jayhawks showing the nation that Kansas still is the home of great basketball!

Left-turn restrictions will soon be implemented at the busy Kellogg and Webb Road interchange to protect construction workers and motorists as the freeway project moves forward.
  Kellogg-Webb Updates
Motorists headed westbound on Kellogg and northbound and southbound Webb Road will have left turns restricted at the Kellogg-Webb intersection beginning March 26, weather permitting.

Left turns will remain available for eastbound Kellogg motorists until otherwise noted.   Proper notification will be provided prior to such restrictions.

Also, between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. during the week of March 28 through April 1, nighttime construction will reduce Kellogg to one lane in each direction. And beginning March 25, the speed limits will be reduced to 40 mph on Kellogg and 30 mph on Webb Road throughout the construction zone. The speed-zone reductions will remain reduced until completion of the project.

These changes will likely have a significant impact on traffic patterns, so please plan ahead, and I ask for your continued patience and courtesy as you drive along this construction project.  To learn more about the project, its timeline, and impacts to traffic, drivers are encouraged to visit:

Some of you may have heard about a shooting incident in Old Town this past weekend.   I have made mentioned before of my confidence and support for our new Police Chief Ramsay.  He has reviewed crime data in Old Town and it shows crime trends are down from previous years. It also shows which days incidents are most likely to occur.   This type of data allows the Chief to adjust the resources for the best use and protection of our citizens and businesses.

Lastly, I want to congratulate the Sedgwick County Zoo, along with our Sedgwick County Commissioners, for the long awaited elephant expansion.   Sedgwick County Zoo Website This took a lot of planning, and a commitment to our community for keeping this zoo as one of the top attractions in our state and region.

Again, have a safe and happy Spring break.

Water Rebate Program

Water Conservation Rebate Program
The City dedicated another $100,000 to the Water Conservation Program this year. Beginning February 1, water customers became eligible to receive a rebate for switching to high efficiency appliances and other water efficient devices: such as HE washing machines, dishwashers, toilets and smart irrigation controls, rain sensors and rain barrels. In the first 30 days of the program, nearly $30,000 in rebates have been awarded.

Rain barrels are often an overlooked possibility for conserving water. Studies suggest that one inch of rain dumps 500 gallons of water on the roof of a 2,000 square foot house. EPA estimates that a rain barrel can save nearly 1,300 gallons of water usage during peak summer months. This is a cost effective solution for gardening and irrigation and also reduces the City's demand for treated water.
