On Tuesday, February 23, Dr. Rina Eiden, senior research scientist from the UB Research Institute on Addictions, presented her research on
Children of Substance Using Parents: Pathways to Risk and Resilience. A video recording and handouts of the presentation can be found on our website.
 The next and final colloquium in the Alberti Center's 2015-2016 series,
The Significance of Friendship and Peer Difficulties in Early Adolescence,
will be presented by Dr. Julie Bowker, associate professor of psychology at UB.

BAND Against Bullying
|
 The fourth annual
BAND Against Bullying, a high-school performing arts competition, will take place on Tuesday, April 26, 2016! Twelve schools from Western New York are scheduled to compete this year. More information and tickets are available on the

The NetSmartz Student Project Kit was developed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The kit helps students in grades 6-12 teach their peers and younger students about topics like cyberbullying, online privacy, and digital ethics.

Save the Date! Alberti Center Annual Conference
|
The 2016 Alberti Center Annual Conference is scheduled to be held on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at Classics V Banquet Center in Amherst. The theme of our conference this year will be "Bullying and People with Disabilities: Challenges and Opportunities." Keynote speakers include Julie Hertzog, Director of PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center and Dr. Chad Rose, assistant professor in special education at the University of Missouri and recipient of the 2015 Alberti Center Early Career Award! Breakout sessions will focus on bullying issues affecting the disability community such as legal perspectives, parenting perspectives, community resources, LGBTQ and disabilities, and a panel of self-advocates. The David Dance
Screening and Discussion

On Thursday, March 3, the Alberti Center and
embraceWNY
co-sponsored a sold out screening of
The David Dance at the Amherst Dipson Theatre. The film's lead actor, writer, and producer, Don
 Scimé attended the screening and participated in a discussion with audience members immediately following. The David Dance (filmed in Buffalo, NY) addresses issues such as LGBTQ bullying, religious perspectives, adoption, and the consequences of childhood bullying. The David Dance has won multiple awards at LGBTQ film festivals across the globe. Learn more about the film!

Special Issue of School Psychology Review

A special issue of
School Psychology Review
guest-edited by Dr. Amanda Nickerson along with Drs. Chad Rose and Melissa Stormont from University of Missouri, has recently been released!
The issue, "Bullying Research from a Social-Ecological Perspective,"
addresses measurement issues, explores preventative and protective processes for students at risk for involvement in bullying, and highlights intervention efforts for youth from early childhood through high school.
Many individuals that contributed to the publication are affiliated with the Alberti Center including: Dr. Jamie Ostrov - faculty affiliate and advisory board member, Dr. Chad Rose - 2015 early career award winner, Dr. Paul Poteat - 2014 early career award winner, Dr. Ariel Aloe - faculty affiliate, Jilynn Werth - graduate assistant, and advisory council members Dr. Dorothy Espelage, Dr. Dewey Cornell, and Dr. Susan Swearer.
Dr. Ostrov's article on the effects of his lab's Early Chidhood Friendship Project 8-week intervention on relational bullying and victimization were highlighted in the UB Reporter!

Committee for Children Grant Update
|
Drs. Amanda Nickerson and Jennifer Livingston and their research team have been busy with the 1-year Child Health and Safety
 Grant funded by the Committee for Children. Dr. Kathleen Allen has been facilitating focus groups with parents throughout western New York and in the next couple of months will be off to California, Nebraska, and Florida to conduct
more! The online part of the study has also begun. If you know parents of children between the ages of 3 to 11
who may want to participate by completing three surveys at three different time points (over a 2-3 month period) and viewing a series of short videos in the second session (and earn $50), have them visit the
project website or

Welcome to our Newest Team Member!
|
Shauna Mauch is our newest research assistant to join the Alberti Center team! Shauna graduated from the Honors College at SUNY Brockport with her Bachelor's in Psychology. She is now in her first year  in the MA/AC School Psychology program at the University at Buffalo. She is currently working on the Child Health and Safety Study. Her research interests include developing and evaluating resources for parents and teachers related to child health, safety, and crisis intervention.
