Canada's Minister of International Trade Cheers Breakthrough in Soft Lumber Agreement Talks

Canada's Minister of International Trade, Chrystia Freeland, is thrilled that President Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have given their officials 100 days to outline a new softwood lumber deal. "I was cheering when I heard the U.S. president-it's not my president, it's their president-saying a deal is a good thing and we're going to reach one and that's what he said," Freeland said following the leaders' joint news conference March 10.

Though the disputes about softwood lumber will not end any time soon, Freeland remains hopeful that the new deadline and the willingness of Americans to compromise will lead to a new deal in everyone's favor. Click here to read more.

NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe Talks Retirement After 40 Years in the Housing World

After 13 years with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as a policy analyst and 27 years as an economist with the National Association of Home Builders, David Crowe has seen his fair share of ups and downs in the housing market. Now, he is retiring as the NAHB's chief economist and handing the reins over to Robert Dietz, the association's current VP of tax and market analysis, on March 18. Robert Dietz spoke during BMSA's membership breakfast at the Building Products Show in early February. Click here to read more.

Builder Confidence Holds Steady in March

Builder confidence in the market for newly-built single-family homes was unchanged in March at a level of 58 on the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI). "Confidence levels are hovering above the 50-point mid-range, indicating that the single-family market continues to make slow but steady progress," said NAHB Chairman Ed Brady. "However, builders continue to report problems regarding a shortage of lots and labor."

"While builder sentiment has been relatively flat for the last few months, the March HMI reading correlates with NAHB's forecast of a steady firming of the single-family sector in 2016," said NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe. "Solid job growth, low mortgage rates, and improving mortgage availability will help keep the housing market on a gradual upward trajectory in the coming months." Click here to read more.
