Gender Difference and Negotiations
By: Peggy S. Bud, Founder, Speaking Skillfully

Even though negotiations are an integral part of our everyday lives, women are reluctant to negotiate for themselves. They are comfortable bargaining with their kids. Eat three more bites, you can have dessert. If you clean your room, you can play Minecraft for 30 more minutes. They happily bargain with their spouses. Clean the garage; I'll drive the kids to soccer. They are even effective negotiators when they are promoting the needs of others. Yet when it comes to themselves, they often forego negotiating and accept what is proposed.

Men tend to be the active negotiators when haggling for a better price for a car, a house or a salary. Women tend to accept what is offered. Why? It goes to how women view the entire process of negotiations. Linda Babcock, author of Women Don't Ask, conducted a survey in one of her graduate classes at Carnegie Mellon. She asked men and women to use metaphors to explain the act of negotiating. Women used terms like "going to the dentist" and men described it as "winning the ballgame."

TMA NOW Event Highlights

TMA Annual NOW Session

Both men and women gathered in Scottsdale, Arizona, during The 2015 TMA Annual for a TMA NOW networking and education session. Charismatic hosts Robyn Pollack and Milly Chow presented a lightning round session of 10 creative ways to market yourself and build your business. View the presentation here.

Playing into TMA NOW's 2015 communications theme, this session was specifically designed to discuss the art of rain-making. A lively discussion of memorable and specific ways to stand out among the crowd, followed by an opportunity to continue the discussion over drinks and appetizers, made this a fantastic event for the TMA NOW community to gather, learn, and network.

Girl Meets World Joint Networking Event (TMA Chesapeake)
The Chesapeake Chapter hosted its inaugural TMA Network of Women (NOW) event in October at The Boathouse Canton in Baltimore, Maryland. The event was co-hosted by the International Women's Insolvency & Restructuring Confederation (IWIRC) and the Stout Risius Ross Women's Resource Group (SRR WRG). Both women and men enjoyed speed networking, great food and cocktails while enjoying an amazing view from a private balcony room overlooking Baltimore's Outer Harbor. Attendees relaxed and enjoyed dinner at small tables of four and were given an opportunity to get to know each other better through informal conversation. After dinner, each attendee received a postcard of thought provoking questions to help them learn more about each other during two rounds of speed networking. The questions were focused on an idea expressed by Dale Carnegie: "You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you." The evening ended with dessert combined with a second informal networking opportunity.
