PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Dear Leaguers,
It's been quite a year: two forums on local issues, two informational meetings on LWVUS studies, two consensus meetings on the studies, a program planning meeting and, two fundraisers! The final meeting of the year before the summer break will be the Annual Meeting, scheduled for May 21. Details on that are coming soon.
As we move into Spring, there are a number of opportunities for you to be part of this dynamic local league and a part of the regional activities as well. First and foremost, please read the article from the Nominating Committee. We're looking at a new leadership structure this year and welcome volunteers for the positions on the board that are available for the coming term (2016-2018). Please contact me with any questions, I'd love to talk with you - 703/534-2159.
Regionally, the LWV of the National Capitol Area (NCA) is hosting its annual convention on May 7th at Clyde's Verizon Center. We can pay for five of you to attend. It's a great opportunity to mix and mingle with Leaguers from our area. Find out more
here.
LWVArlington is hosting "How to Run a Meeting" on May 22nd - 4 -5:30 p.m at the Arlington Central Library 1015 N. Quincy Street. Great information for all of us! Further details are available at
www.lwv-arlingtonva.org
Statewise, LWV Virginia is hosting its Council in Richmond on June 4th. This is always a great learning experience for both new and not-so-new members. Info on this will be coming soon from LWV-VA.
Nationally, LWVUS Convention will take place in DC June 16-19. We are allowed two voting delegates but because it's local, we can send more if any of you are interested. Also, there are volunteer opportunities which allow you to attend any session when you are not volunteering, plus you will get a free ticket to the Capitol Steps, always a fun event! LWVNCA is the host league for this national event. See the volunteer registration link for details and convention information
here.
If you are interested in any or all of the above convention/council events, please contact me for further details. I hope to get lots of inquiries from you! Also, contact me or any member of the nominating committee for more details - we want to hear from you.
Enjoy the spring. Cherry blossoms are already out on Park Avenue.
Sincerely,
Ellen

A NOTE FROM 2015 LWVFC SCHOLARSHIP FUND RECIPIENT SARA CAMPBELL:
I have just returned from a grueling but wonderful 10 day tour with BYU Ballet Theater. I hope 2016 finds you well. It has been a pleasure to write this email and update you on my college experience.
College has been a lot of work but I have relished every moment of it. I have learned so much from my courses, my friendships and my extra curricular activities. I honestly don't know how to thank you adequately for the scholarship which helped me pay for my tuition and cut back on the hours I would otherwise have had to work. As a result I was able to audition for the university's company ballet program. I was one of 13 girls accepted onto the team. It has been a wonderful, fulfilling and extraordinary learning experience in my life. I have become so close to the ballerina's I've worked with and have had wonderful opportunities to perform. In March we completed a full length production of Alice in Wonderland which was sold out for four of the five performances. I learned so much!
I also just returned from an extensive tour of the West Coast. I performed in multiple cities and taught ballet workshops for underprivileged and abused children every day. It was exhausting but the most fulfilling experience imaginable. It changed my life.
Ballet has been a much needed physical outlet for the many hours I spend in the library studying. I am planning to become a physician and the science courses are very rigorous. I currently qualify for a full academic scholarship for next year and I wholeheartedly believe that my success has come from the opportunity to have a well rounded and balanced freshman year. It has set the tone for my university experience and I would like to express my fervent appreciation and love to all of you for giving me such a generous financial gift.
Sincerely,
Sara Campbell

LWVFC Call For Nominations 2016-18
Consider a position on the Board of Directors under a new flexible management team model.
There will be a number of openings on the LWVFC Board of Directors this year for Leaguers eager to serve our local membership, as well as take part in regional, state, and national activities that are supportive of our mission As of June 30, we plan to adopt a more flexible Management Team Model that will promote job-sharing opportunities, as well as provide a structure that would take into account League members' busy lives. The Management Team model, developed by LWV-US, will include the ability to co-chair offices (for example, having two or more co-Presidents), as well as job-sharing other board positions where it is feasible and attractive to those involved.
The current board believes the new structure will promote membership, continuity, and participation. It will also free board members to pursue their needed personal goals without being tied to the LWVFC calendar. For example, working it out with other team members, you could spend the month of August at your beach house without worrying about LWVFC business, or attend your grand-daughter wedding guilt-free the week before the LWVFC Annual Meeting! You can take a look at the Management Team Model
here.
Giving your time and effort to LWVFC is a service to our 90+ members and the entire Falls Church City community. You will also receive a big payback in terms of the appreciation you will receive, as well as developing new skills and friendships.
Positions that will be open for the June 30, 2016-June 30, 2018 year are:
- Presidents (Management Team)
- Vice President
- Fundraising
- Membership Co-Chair
- Administrative Team
- Program co-chair
- Secretary
