Rabbi's Message Jerry Cutler
Shavuot

The festival of Shavuot (June 12 - 13) is when, legend tells us, the Torah was given to the Jewish people. Rabbi Meir Alter of Ger once asked the following question: "Why is the festival of Shavuot called 'the time of the giving of our Torah' and not the time of the receiving of the Torah?"

The answer is simple. The giving of the Torah happened at one specific time, but the receiving of the Torah happens every time and in every generation.

That is the reason the 10 Commandments are read every Shavuot over and over again, because each generation has their own take on the meaning.

Obviously, things are much more complicated today than in the many years gone bye. However, the point is, my friends, that if we kept the 10 Commandments we would not need any more laws or prisons or punishments.....

Following WWI, President Woodrow Wilson broadcast the famous Fourteen Points to be used when negotiating the world peace. Premier George Clemenceau, the "Tiger of France" criticized him and said, "Look at Wilson, he's trying to do better than Moses. Moses gave us Ten Commandments and Wilson wants to give us fourteen."
Wilson answered, "Mr. Clemenceau, if you promise to live up to the 10 Commandments, I will give up my fourteen commandments."

If only today's world would live up to the basic tenets of the Torah, what a better, peace-filled and loving world this would be.

Peace and Love everybody.

Rabbi Jake

Katy's Puppets
Tess Cutler's video about CAT member Katy Haber's box of puppets

Three years ago, CAT sponsored a pop-up exhibit, featuring Katy Haber and her box of puppets during High Holidays. The story behind these 70-year-old puppets is heartbreaking. Tess wrote about it for the Jewish Journal  and made this video.

WHODATHUNKIT?

Not in a million years, and certainly not in my lifetime................Donald Trump the presumptive Republican nominee (as of mid-May). His disapproval rating above 50%, above 70% among women voters

On the Demo side...........the Jewish guy is still hanging in there and making Hillery look bad while doing so. 42% of eligible voters dislike, do not trust, actually loathe her. On the other hand, 42% love her and are in favor.

Which leaves 16% to decide our future. DT refuses to release his tax returns. The Washington Post has assigned 20 full-time reporters to dig into the past and present of "the" Donald. Folks, we are in for several months of mud-slinging. BE PREPARED.

           WHAT NO L.A.?

According to a study reported in the Jerusalem Post, New York, Boston and Miami are the three most Jewish cities per capita, in the USA. According to the data compiled, eight % of NYC residents are Jewish, followed by 6% for Boston and 5% for Miami. Philadelphia and San Francisco are 4% each. and Chicago and Washington are 3%. Nationally, the study cites that Jews comprise two percent of all Americans.

High Holidays

The High Holidays begin at sundown on Sunday, October 2. We are very excited that our Cantor will once again be the multi-talented, Mike Burstyn.

Services will be held at the Beverly Vista School which is located between S. Elm and S. Rexford and Charleville and Gregory Way.  The entrance to the auditorium is on the corner of S. Rexford and Gregory Way.

It's a very nice auditorium, but holds only 475 seats, so you must order your seats and any extra seats early to ensure a seat for the Holidays.

We've enclosed our Membership/Seat Reservation Form and a Tashlich flyer which will tell you about our brief Rosh Hashanah and Tashlich services on the second day of Rosh Hashanah. Please consider joining us for this very beautiful service.

Fill out the Seat Reservation Form and return it to us ASAP so that we can accommodate you. We're looking forward to experiencing another year of uplifting and spiritual services with you,
