Rabbi's Message
Shavuot
The festival of Shavuot (June 12 - 13) is when, legend tells us, the Torah was given to the Jewish people. Rabbi Meir Alter of Ger once asked the following question: "Why is the festival of Shavuot called 'the time of the giving of our Torah' and not the time of the receiving of the Torah?"
The answer is simple. The giving of the Torah happened at one specific time, but the receiving of the Torah happens every time and in every generation.
That is the reason the 10 Commandments are read every Shavuot over and over again, because each generation has their own take on the meaning.
Obviously, things are much more complicated today than in the many years gone bye. However, the point is, my friends, that if we kept the 10 Commandments we would not need any more laws or prisons or punishments.....
Following WWI, President Woodrow Wilson broadcast the famous Fourteen Points to be used when negotiating the world peace. Premier George Clemenceau, the "Tiger of France" criticized him and said, "Look at Wilson, he's trying to do better than Moses. Moses gave us Ten Commandments and Wilson wants to give us fourteen."
Wilson answered, "Mr. Clemenceau, if you promise to live up to the 10 Commandments, I will give up my fourteen commandments."
If only today's world would live up to the basic tenets of the Torah, what a better, peace-filled and loving world this would be.
Peace and Love everybody.
