CHIA President's Message
Consumer Engagement: The Connection Between
Providers & Patients for Better Health Care
Message from CHIA President Deborah Collier, RHIA

Consumer engagement is rapidly gaining more attention as the connection is visible that engaged consumers present a vital role in improving the quality of care. The health information technology that facilitates the ease of access to personal health information is also swiftly evolving. If technology enables the connection of providers and patients to their health information, who has the knowledge to connect them effectively? The answer is, of course, all of us as health information management professionals. Many roles for our HIM expertise are evolving concurrently with the adoption of consumer engagement efforts.

The CHIA Board of Directors is working on strategic goals to help drive CHIA into the HIM future. One of these strategic goals is to focus and promote the advancing need to support consumer engagement; Public Good: Empower consumers to use personal health information to optimize their health.

AHIMA is also focusing on consumer engagement, and has developed a Consumer Engagement Toolkit to serve as a valuable training and educational resource for all HIM professionals, AHIMA component state associations (CSAs), HIM students and educators, healthcare providers, and the general public as consumers of healthcare. The Consumer Engagement Toolkit identifies resources available to assist patients in engaging in the management of their own care.

Health Informatics:
New Areas of Analytics, New Opportunities
By: Melanie Meyer, MHA, RHIT, CCS

The phrase "big data" is commonly used today in health care as wider data availability increases demands for data accumulation and analysis. "Big data" refers to both the volume and variety of data available. Health care data comes in many forms, both structured and unstructured, making the data aggregation process even more challenging. Often health care data are generated from disparate systems and must be combined for productive analysis. Additionally, there are many potential users of this data - clinicians, administrators, and researchers, for example. Even patients are becoming more involved in managing and using their own health care data.

Aggregating data to become "big data" is important to allow us to understand and predict disease as well as to improve the delivery of care. In January 2015, President Obama announced a new initiative on precision medicine, an emerging approach for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle. Analysis of big data is a key step toward precision medicine. The shift to value-based health care and population health management is also a key driver for big data analysis. Value-based health care programs focus on triple aims - improving the experience of care, improving the health of populations, and reducing health care costs.

The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has released a crosswalk developed with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) to help healthcare organizations covered by HIPAA bolster their security posture. The crosswalk identifies "mappings" between the NIST Framework for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity and the HIPAA Security Rule. The crosswalk also includes mappings to other commonly used security frameworks.
