Raising Godly leaders for a country in need
Choices
  September 2015
My heart has been touched again these last few months by so many things and people, in particular by a certain young man named Paul. Paul has been sponsored in the ministry for 12 years and is now 17 years old. Paul has grown up in a home that has 9 siblings and two mud huts. One hut is used for a kitchen and the other for all of them to sleep. Of course, when a young man gets to a certain age, usually around 14 or 15, he makes his own hut to live in and Paul has done this now.
He struggled all through primary school, but finished well. I am so proud of the work he put into it because he was the least likely to succeed, and yet he did. His grades were very good, and he went on to high school. Paul has had a problem with stuttering, but by the time he finished primary school he seemed to nearly overcome this completely. Recently he came to visit me in the office and I
noticed his stuttering had become a problem again. I asked him what was happening and why he seemed so down.
We had put Paul in a boarding school because his home conditions were not good. At least in a boarding school he has three meals a day, a bed to sleep in and better water conditions as well as electricity by which to study. However, Paul did not like living away from home. As a result, he requested a high school in the area which he could attend as a day school student. We allowed the change with reservations! It seems his mother is not home much, his father has been dead for a long time, and now he is struggling again.
Again now he is changing and wants to change to a vocational school. I sat him down to have a heart to heart talk. We talked for around two hours trying to come up with a solution. Part of that time we prayed and in my heart I felt that there was a lot of spiritual warfare going on. My heart was crying inside for this young man. Something went wrong somewhere. After many discussions and prayers, Paul has finally settled to continue high school and has a little more confidence that he can do it. I am asking you all to pray for Paul and against the unseen forces at work in his life. He is not a young man that does not care or he would not spend two hours with me in the office!! Please pray for him. His struggles are not over.
Paul is just one example of some of the problems we face. Many of the children are growing up in homes with witchcraft, or brewing, drinking and selling of liquor. Paul is one of these young people who has grown in such a home. He was the last of the ten children, the baby of the home, and he is trying to find a true home which he can only find in Jesus Christ. He is closer, I believe, than he has been in years to finding the Lord, as he is seeking.
Genesis Primary School is doing well and we are so thankful for all that God is doing there. We are so thankful for the people who offered scholarships to make the school affordable for non-sponsored community children who would otherwise not have the opportunity to go to any school in the area. We ask that you consider helping this group of children again for the next school year. The sponsored children attending Genesis are taken care of through their sponsorship. We are also beginning the Christmas collections of $35 per child for a Christmas gift and food.

I am back in the states right now for my usual fall visit. I am looking forward to seeing so many of you that are part of us, and I am thankful to God for your part in the work that we have a chance to do in Uganda. Altogether we have had 173 children grow up and finish the sponsorship program. Not all of them are saved and not all of them have good jobs as yet. However, I know we have had influence on their lives through the Holy Spirit and your help. These are children that would have gone through 3rd or 4th grade, or if lucky, 7th grade. They would be sitting at home doing nothing and wondering how to exist. Instead they are out working and some are talking of helping a child in the ministry. I believe that we will have sponsors from many of them as they settle in their lives. I know that some of them are helping children from their own homes already. For example, Sarah who works for us as a social worker, is helping two siblings in her home to complete high school from the funds she is making. It is not easy, but they are willing to help someone like someone helped them.
Give thanks to the Lord, for He is at work in so many places, He is faithful and He loves and cares about all of us. God bless you and thank you for being a part of all of this,   Katherine
