GCSS Celebrates "Heart" Month

February is American "Heart" Month to raise public awareness about heart disease. The American Heart Association encourages everyone to become more knowledgeable about the importance of maintaining a healthy heart. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. In fact, every year 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease. Fortunately, heart disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions.

Communities, health professionals, schools, and families can work together to create opportunities for people to make healthier choices. The Gainesville City School System is making a difference by increasing public awareness among our students, parents, employees, and community. Our schools are hosting events such as Jump Rope for Hearts and Hoops for Hearts.  Some schools and even the district have gone a step further increasing employee awareness by offering mini-sessions on heart disease and Hands Only CPR training.

There are several ways that heart disease can be preventable.
  • Make small changes to your diet like using spices to season food instead of salt and eat healthier foods such as fruits and vegetables.
  • Make physical activity a daily part of your routine and encourage family and friends to exercise with you.
  • Schedule regular check-ups with your health professional to closely monitor your cholesterol and blood pressure.
Join us in spreading the word about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle to maintain a healthy heart. Student Make-Up Day - February 15, 2016

Don't forget to mark your calendars! Monday, February 15, 2016 will be a student make-up day, and students should report to school.  The district had implemented this date within the 2015-2016 school calendar to be utilized in case of inclement weather.
Celebrating School Counseling Week
School counselors assist students in various ways

National School Counseling Week was celebrated the first week in February to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within school systems. Sponsored by the American School Counseling Association , the week highlighted the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.

School counselors are an important part of the educational leadership team and provide valuable assistance to students regardless of whether they work in an elementary school, middle school, or high school. They make a measurable impact in every student's life, assisting with academic, career, and personal/social development.

Professional school counselors are trained in both educating and counseling, allowing them to function as a facilitator between parents, teachers, and the student in matters concerning the student's goals, abilities, and any areas needing improvement. They provide services not only to students in need, but to all students.

The school district commends all of our counselors for their dedication and commitment to our students' academic success and physical and emotional well-being.  A special thanks to our amazing counselors:  Kayla Waters (Centennial), Carol Ann Ligon (Enota), Dr. Kim Hall (Fair Street),  Duduzile Siphambili (Gainesville Exploration), Tannia Wood (New Holland), Monica Hayman (GMS), Philip Elrod (GMS), Matilde Garmley (GMS),  Michael Jackson (GHS), JD Mutchler (GHS), Tracey Wilson (GHS), and Rakia Marcus (GHS).

Students Research Careers and Colleges
Students use computers for research

Enota students have been very busy in their technology classes. Fourth and fifth graders are working on projects using Google Slides that require them to think about their futures. Fourth grade students are researching careers that they are interested in pursuing after high school. They are learning valuable information such as what a day is typically like for a person in that field, the average salary of that career, and what kind of degrees are required to work in that field. Many students are researching careers in real estate, meteorology, and education. Several students are also interested in becoming doctors and lawyers!

Fifth grade students are researching colleges that  they might be interested in attending. They are learning about majors and activities offered at colleges of interest as well as other interesting facts that may help to drive their future decisions. The students have also learned that they need to start working hard in school by making good grades and making good choices if they want to attend the university or college of their dreams.
GHS Band Adds A Little "Pep"
Band students perform at Brenau

On Thursday, January 29,  Brenau University had its first ever Basketball Pep Band. In fact, this band was made up primarily of Gainesville High School band students. In a joint venture, forteen members of the GHS Big Red Machine joined forces with the newly formed instrumental music department at Brenau to entertain the crowd as the Golden Tigers Ladies Basketball team was victorious over the College of Coastal Georgia.

The pep band is under the direction of Mr. Don Strand, Professor of Instrumental Music at Brenau. This represents the first of many mutually beneficial collaborations between the college and the members of The Big Red Machine. The students are excited about the opportunity to share their talents within a college environment.

"I am very excited about the prospects of this joint collaboration," stated GHS Band Director Larry Miller. "Gainesville City has a long tradition of working with several colleges in the area. Be it serving as a venue to help foster future teachers, working as mentors in the community, or working with our business partners." He added, "This is yet another opportunity for us to share our Gainesville resources with the community in a setting that is mutually beneficial."

Mr. Miller sees the future benefits that the partnership with Brenau has to offer to GHS band students.  He stated, "We are looking forward to the many ways that this joint venture may help both programs. Obviously, I am anxious to get the college students actively involved with our high school musicians, which will hopefully lead to private lessons, master classes, and other performance opportunities."
