Celebrating with Craig-Houghton

Craig-Houghton School Appreciation Day is Sunday, June 5!

Join us as we celebrate the students, teachers, support staff, and volunteers of Augusta's Craig-Houghton School. Since 2007 Saint Paul's has partnered with Craig-Houghton to help students from challenged backgrounds succeed through a mentoring program coordinated and funded by the Outreach  Committee. Volunteers from Saint Paul's tutor recommended students in math, English, and other subjects. They also coach them in test-taking, ethics, and getting along with others through role-playing games and group discussions.

Celebrating another great year.
What began as a program that took Saint Paul's members Al and Laraine Yarbrough and Anita Tanner to Craig for one hour a week has grown into an active enterprise with ten tutors.
Craig students have become the focus of Saint Paul's Angel Tree Christmas program and annual school supply and coat drives.

Thanks to the generosity of Saint Paul's members at Mardi Gras, the Outreach Committee was able to purchase uniforms for the Craig-Houghton Tigers track team. Looking wonderful in their new uniforms, the Craig Tigers won or placed in several citywide events and sent two of their own to the State Class A Championship meet.
Go Tigers!

Life is Sweet!
It's been a stellar year for the kids in the tutoring program, too. They swept through Awards Day, winning honors in track, music, citizenship, conduct, and most improved in math, science, and English language arts.

On May 20th, the students and their tutors celebrated their hard work and successes with an end of-year party. The kids built ice cream sundaes, showed off the latest dances to their tutors, and enjoyed the lovely performance of a BeyoncĂ© song by one of their group. As you can tell from the photos, the cup of joy was running over all sides.

During the school year, mentors meet students Wednesdays at 1  PM at Craig for a concentrated hour of work and fun. If you would like to help the kids at Craig do their best,  email KathyEnicks.

BRIEFLY, WHAT IS EfM?
Briefly, what is EfM? It is an adult Christian formation program of the Episcopal Church of study, prayer, and reflection in a small group setting that helps participants grow in knowledge and in faith-connecting both in how they live as Christians in the world. The course spans the entire sweep of the Christian tradition from the earliest period to the present: Scripture, ethics, theology, church history, worship, and spirituality. The curriculum is comprised of four "years" of thirty-six week cycles of group meetings led by one or two mentors. The new "year" will begin in late August or early September. There are between five and six openings in the Sunday night group that meets from 6:45 and 9:00 PM; however, if there is sufficient interest a new weekday group may be formed that meets at Saint Paul's between 9:30 and noon.

NEXT STEPS:
Look for members of Saint Paul's EfM Group at an information table in the narthex (or on the porch) immediately before and after the 11:00 service and following the 5:30 service during the month of May. Also, Fr. Jenkins and Suzanne Crotteau, who both serve as group mentors, welcome your inquiries.
Looking Ahead
