Alderman Scott Waguespack, 32nd Ward Newsletter
May 27, 2016

This Memorial day weekend, like everyday, is a time to remember those who have lost their lives defending our freedom. On Saturday, there will be a wreath laying ceremony on the Daley Plaza Eternal Flame at 11 a.m. The Chicago Memorial Day parade starts at noon.   The Norwood Park Parade also kicks off at 11 .m. on Monday. It's a day to remember those who have died in service to our country but also a time to honor veterans and active service members.

CPS students, parents and supporters traveled to Springfield this week to push for more equitable statewide funding of public education.  For more information on the issue, and how you can help, check out the Raise Your Hand update for the week. For a brief history of CPS and more background on what led to the funding issues we have today, check out this Q & A from Catalyst Chicago.

Have a great Memorial Day weekend,

Alderman Scott Waguespack

Public Meeting: Cortland Wood Greenway
Alderman Waguespack, in conjunction with the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), held a public meeting on May 25th at the Wicker Park Bucktown Library.  CDOT and our office have developed concepts for potential neighborhood greenways on Cortland Street (Damen to Ashland) and Wood Street (Milwaukee to Cortland). We are coordinating with the schools and the fire department to make sure all safety aspects of the plans are covered. The goal of this initiative is to increase comfort for bicyclists and pedestrians and improve accessibility to the existing bicycle network and 606 trail and parks.

Neighborhood Greenways incorporate traffic calming, pavement markings, and signage to promote safe motor vehicle speeds, reduce cut-through traffic, and prioritize the safety of bicyclists and pedestrians in order to create a more enjoyable street for all residents. Mikva Challenge Now Recruiting Students for the November Election!
As this school year winds down, Mikva Challenge is already looking towards NEXT year's elections. They  will be partnering with the Board of Elections to recruit 2,000+ Student Election Judges. Given the quick turnaround from when school begins in the fall and the November 8th election, Mikva is starting the recruitment process NOW before school ends this summer.

If you are a student or have a student who is interested in participating, then you should fill out this form:  http://tinyurl.com/SJ2016interest

Students can fill out this form IF they:

1. Will be a high school junior or senior next fall (CURRENT SOPHOMORE or JUNIOR)
2. Have a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale;
3. Will be a U.S. citizen by Election Day;
4. Can read, write, and speak English

By filling out this form students are merely expressing interest in the program; they are not officially signing up to be a student judge. THIS IS NOT THE APPLICATION.

The online application will be sent out mid-June to students who have expressed interest by filling out the above form.

If you have any further questions, feel free to email your questions to  studentjudges@mikvachallenge.org.
Progressive Caucus passed the Debt Transparency, Accountability and Performance Ordinance
The Progressive Caucus passed the Debt Transparency, Accountability and Performance Ordinance at the May City Council meeting. The ordinance was designed to create oversight and transparency for untested financial arrangements like toxic swap deals. The ordinance, which passed unanimously, will require an unprecedented level of transparency and disclosure on the part of the City. Under the ordinance, no long-term debt transactions or novel transactions that bear interest at a non-fixed rate for any part of its life, may be entered into by the City until several new criteria are met.

Street Sweeping Schedule

Please help by clearing off garbage, leaves, and landscaping debris from the curbs and sewers before the sweeper hits your street. Landscaped parkways need to be designed to keep landscaping debris out of the curbs and gutters.  Please make sure to move your vehicle on your designated street cleaning day so that the street can be thoroughly cleaned and so that you don't receive a parking ticket.
