A Message from Council Member

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day and was initiated to honor the soldiers for the Union and Confederate armies who died during the American Civil War. The original national celebration of Decoration Day took place on May 30, 1868. It wasn't until after World War II that the holiday gained a strong following and national identity, and it wasn't officially named Memorial Day until 1967.
The final event that cemented the modern culture of Memorial Day in America was in 1968 when Congress passed the Uniform Holiday Act, designating Memorial Day as the last Monday in May rather than May 30, as it had previously been observed. This ensured a three-day weekend and gave the day its current status as the unofficial beginning of summer, mixing serious reflection with more lighthearted fun.
Memorial Day has come to signify the start of summer for many and is often celebrated with cookouts, family get-togethers, parades and concerts. But the real meaning of Memorial Day has, for too many, gotten lost in holiday hoopla. Memorial Day is a solemn day of remembrance for everyone who has died serving in the American armed forces. Memorial Day was created as an occasion to honor those who have paid the ultimate price to ensure our freedom. It is our opportunity to stop and give thanks for the many who have died protecting that freedom.
This Memorial Day, enjoy burgers and hot dogs with loved ones, but take a moment to remember those who can't do the same. Remember those families who will have an empty seat at their table and the men and women who used to occupy it.
Thank you to all who serve and protect our Country!
Have a good weekend!

Water Conservation Rebate Program Maintains Participation
City Council authorized $100,000 in February 2016 to continue to encourage Wichitans to incorporate high-efficiency, water-saving devices
and appliances into their homes. As of May 13, 2016 only
$15,012 remains for this program.
Approximately 40 applications are being received each week and staff anticipates
that funding will be exhausted within the next 30 days.
The results of a recently published Water Research Foundation study indicate that the 23 utilities in the sample showed a
decline of 22% in average annual indoor household water use
since the last such study was published in 1999. The study
reports "the reductions in household water use are largely due
to more efficient fixtures and appliances and are not the result
of either occupancy or behavior".

Visitors to Old Cowtown Museum are used to seeing the Victorian era portrayed true to form, but when Steampunk Day arrives on
Saturday May 28, they will experience a re-imagined, more advanced 19th century straight out of a Jules Verne or H.G. Wells novel.
The sixth annual Steampunk Day, sponsored by the imaginary "Tesla and Lovecraft Mail Order Catalogue Company", includes "new" products and inventions, music and dance performances, airship "demonstrations" and unique shopping opportunities.
What is Steampunk? Simply put, Steampunk is Victorian science fiction that takes modern inventions - the Internet, weaponry, clocks - and re-imagines how they would look had they been created with Victorian technology and materials.
There will be demonstrations and panels with Airship Devil's Blight and Airship Vindus. We will also have a cannon duel and the Scallywags will entertain all. And Fireshark Gaming will allow you to literally step into
the game!
Come dressed in your best costume and be entered in our costume contest. Or you
can join in the beard and mustache competition!
So come on out to Cowtown on May 28 and step into a whole new world of adventure!

Nobody wants to have a heart attack. So people can fall into the trap of looking for
new-fangled ways to decrease their
risk of a heart attack. They may look for the
the newest supplement, in order to prevent a heart attack.
As a physician, I routinely assessed my patients' "risk factors," or aspects of health
that contribute to the risk for heart
attacks and strokes. Risk factors include age,
of early heart disease, blood pressure, smoking, weight, cholesterol
and diabetes.
While you can't do anything about your age or your family's history, you CAN affect all
of the other risk factors. Do two things: Don't smoke! And Walk!
Walking decreases blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and diabetes. Aim for walking 30 minutes a day, 5 days per week. Even 15 minutes per day is helpful, so if you don't think you
can manage 30 minutes, start with less. Short on time? Take short walks on your work breaks or park farthest from the entrance when out shopping.
You don't have to go to a gym, or run, to get the benefits.
Just put on your shoes
and walk. Wichita has an abundance
of parks and walking paths to explore if you wish. There's probably one near you. Or you can just walk in your neighborhood. Where you walk doesn't matter.
