On May 5, the National Weather Service Forecast Office at Wilmington presented a 25-year institution length of service award for the staff at the U.S. Dept. of Energy Portsmouth Site in Piketon. The staff for the DOE's cleanup contractor, Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth, not only provides precipitation data, but also has occasionally read the manual river gauge at Piketon along the Scioto River when there is a data outage from the automated river gauge. These observations have directly assisted with river forecasts and warnings for the Pike County area along the Scioto River.

Cooperative Weather Observers serve a critical role by contributing to the knowledge and understanding of the local, national, and global climate. Fluor staff observations over the last 25 years prove a deep level of commitment to public service and a lasting and important contribution to the National Weather Service, research, and private sector communities. More specifically, they have helped the NWS to understand and solve problems related to climate change, commerce, transportation, and agriculture.

Students from Carla Evans' Advanced Environmental Science class at
Waverly High School visit Lake Hope State Park as part of educational
activities included within the Ohio University Student ASER Summary
Project. The summary will be distributed to stakeholders in the region this fall.

Waverly class prepares DOE
Environmental Report Summary

PIKETON, Ohio - The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Annual Site Environmental Report (ASER) is an approximate 300-page, technically complex document that characterizes various aspects of the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon, Ohio.

To a group of Waverly High School students who were tasked with summarizing it (complete with graphics), it was something else.

"It was pretty intimidating," said Andrew Trego, an 18-year-old senior who was part of Carla Evans' Advanced Environmental Science class. The class took part in Ohio University's program to turn the ASER into a more comprehensible document to be distributed publicly throughout the region.

"They thought it was hard, but we broke the class into four groups and we got through it," Evans said. "Some of the students had preconceptions about the site, but they came to have a better understanding of what really goes on there."

Project during a recognition ceremony in May. Also  pictured are Jeffrey Noble and

The class recently completed the project after working on it throughout the 2015-2016 school year. Ohio University will print and publish the student summary of the ASER in the fall. Daniel Kloepfer, a research associate in his first year of administering the program for OU's Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs, organized field trips and scheduled guest speakers so the class would have a better understanding of the subject matter. "I think one of the biggest values is that the students get to go and see the site," he said.

"I appreciated the speakers and how they talked about how their careers were made," said Evans, who has been a teacher at Waverly Schools for 14 years. "They explained to the students that they didn't have to be straight-A students to have a professional career in science. I think it allowed them to see what's possible."

For Trego, he had an appreciation for seeing the plant before its decontamination and decommissioning in the coming years. "I really enjoyed (the project)," he said. "I've always enjoyed history and I liked learning about the history of the plant. It was a good opportunity for a lot of students to get to see something that many people will never get to see."

For Greg Simonton, a DOE representative who attended a ceremony recognizing the students in May, Trego's observation is exactly the point. "Telling the story of the Portsmouth site and recognizing its historical significance is important and programs like this one allow us to do that," said Simonton, a Waverly High School alumnus. "This generation of young people will play a vital role in determining how the plant site will impact the region's future."

SUMMER ARRIVES with
JIMMY BUFFETT PARTY
and PARROTS of the CARIBBEAN
Saturday, June 4

Sugarloaf Mountain will get tropical as Southern Ohioans dig out their island-wear, dust off their leis and grab their shades to party with the number one Jimmy Buffett tribute act in the country, the Parrots of the Caribbean! Summer will officially arrive in Chillicothe with Parrots of the Caribbean on Saturday, June 4 for a 7:00 pm concert. The POTC band performs a high-energy, original stage show featuring a "Salute to Jimmy Buffett". These seasoned professionals perform Buffett's biggest songs, their own original Cajun country-rock hits, along with wild and crazy and sometimes outrageous stage show antics. The band has delighted audiences throughout the U.S. and Canada for over a decade. In 2012 they performed for our Troops in Okinawa Japan.

The five musicians who make up the Parrots of the Caribbean exemplify a wide variety of talent. Dave Albrecht, lead singer began his career impersonating "Elwood Blues," the Dan Akroyd character for a Blues Brothers Band. After traveling with it for five years he joined "Legends in Concert" a top-ranked show of impersonators in Las Vegas. He eventually transitioned to his Jimmy Buffett act gathering the finest seasoned musicians. Jeff "Hawaiian Hillbilly" Cline on lead and rhythm guitar and backup vocals is as diverse in his styles of music as his heritage. With his Polynesian mother and Air Force father he grew up in three states and German. On keyboard, Kenny "Tips" Rice, called "The Professor" brings more than 40 years of professional musical performance. A classically trained pianist, Rice has transitioned to all musical genres and an assortment of groups. He has opened for such artists as Edgar Winter, Cheap Trick, Eddie Money, George Carlin, Michael Bolton and Willie Nelson. Greg Martin on percussion and vocals has been performing for nearly 40 years across the country and abroad. Gary "Riptide" Rigmaiden on bass and back-up vocals hails from the Golf Coast of Louisiana and spent part of his youth in Spain and Brazil. For him the island music, songs of the sea, bayou themes and beachcomber blues of Jimmy Buffet's music are right at home.

"A Parrots of the Caribbean concert is one of the most fun nights you can have anywhere doing anything.   We'll have margaritas, cheeseburgers, beach balls and expect everyone to dress appropriately with tasteless Hawaiian shirts and flip flops.  Let's celebrate the arrival of summer together!" Said Scioto Society CEO, Brandon Smith.

Tickets are $20 for reserved seating in advance and $25 day of show.  Concerts are rain or shine events and all sales are final. There will be no opening act.
