Dear MMHS Members and Friends,
Fall is in the air and we are excited about the many end of the year activities that will be going on at MMHS: our regular programs, school and adult tours, our membership drive for new members, a fascinating Third Thursday Lecture in November and finishing with a bang with our 16th Annual Winter Celebration. We hope that you and your family will be involved in any way you can, so you too will be part of "the Mandarin Experience!"

"Music Under the Oaks"
A community jam - all are invited to play, listen, paint, or dance. Bring a chair and water. The museum will be open for viewing and restrooms. Held at Walter Jones Park.

"Meet the Maple Leaf Divers"
Meet Dr. Keith Holland and SJAEI divers who brought up the Civil War artifacts from the muddy St. Johns River bottom. Artifacts not seen here before are now on display.

"Yoga on the River"
Join registered Yoga instructor, Karen Roumillat, on the Boardwalk in Walter Jones park for a morning of gentle Yoga - all while gazing at the peaceful and beautiful St. Johns River.
Bring a mat and water.

MMHS awarded Rotary Grant
As you may recall, in April we were the grateful beneficiaries of the Rotary Club of Mandarin's "Laughs for Charity" event. That made us eligible to apply for a matching grant from Rotary District 6970 - all for the project of the 1889 schoolhouse renovation, exhibits and educational outreach.
MMHS applied, and in August we were awarded such a grant.
These funds will not only allow us to finish the schoolhouse project, but will allow Duval County 4th graders, who are studying Florida history, to come for a tour of the schoolhouse, museum, farmhouse and 1911 Store and Post Office - for FREE, including bus transportation. This opportunity was offered to 500 students at selected schools in Duval County. We so look forward to engaging these young students and getting them excited about their local history.
Thank you to the Mandarin Rotary Club and the District for the wonderful generosity and support given to our educational mission in Mandarin.

Mark your Calendars - Third Thursday Lecture - November 19
|
We are excited to have the St. Johns River Alliance as our guests for our Third Thursday Lecture in November. This presentation will open your eyes to all of the wonderful parks, interesting points and activities along the length of the St. Johns River.
The St. Johns River Alliance's (SJRA) mission is to " preserve, protect, promote, restore and celebrate the St. Johns River as an American Heritage River." One activity that helps fulfill that mission is that SJRA is responsible for promoting the St. Johns River as an official state paddling trail.
Speakers Andrea Conover, SJRA Program Manager, and Gus Bianchi, retired Navy and teacher, recently completed kayaking the entire river. Their presentation shows how the 310-mile north-flowing river changes from its headwaters in the marshes west of Vero Beach through the lakes and springs of the middle basin to the wide, developed and busy lower basin. Along the way, one finds old Florida fish camps, towns, restaurants, parks and springs. Their presentation includes photographs, maps and a list of access points to enjoy the river. Their photos are fascinating as well as breath taking.
The Mandarin Museum & Historical Society presents Third Thursday Lectures quarterly in partnership with the Mandarin Community Club to educate the public about historical figures, general history and events in and around Mandarin, including the St. Johns. This event will be presented on Thursday, November 19 at the Mandarin Community Club, which is located at 12447 Mandarin Road. Refreshments are at 6:30 pm with the presentation at 7:00 pm. It is free and all are invited and encouraged to attend. For more information, call 268-0784.

First Coast Scaffolding, a locally owned and operated business, provided a generous gift to the community by donating and erecting all needed scaffolding for the schoolhouse painting needs. Owner John McGraw answered our call and we are forever grateful to him for his generosity. FCS will be listed on our website as a Business Partner. Please consider them for any scaffolding needs you or your business might need in the future.
And to the many volunteers who have been working with Jim Rafferty - quietly, steadily and efficiently - getting this entire building into great shape.

"Calling all builders, bakers and gingerbread makers"....this is the call from Jacksonville Historical Society as they invite the community to participate in this year's annual
GINGERBREAD EXTRAVAGANZA.
It would be so much fun to participate and have a Mandarin entry this year by submitting a gingerbread 1889 Schoolhouse! What do you think? Any creative bakers out there that would like to take the challenge? If you can bake and build but don't feel too creative, Gabriele Dempsey has volunteered to design the entry for you.
Please let us know at 268-0784 if you have any interest in taking this on. It is a wonderful family event that takes place in December.

MMHS is grateful to be the recipient of a $5150. grant for Fiscal Year 2015-16 through the Cultural Services Grant Program. Managed by the Cultural Council of Northeast Florida, these grants are available for "general operating support for Duval County arts and cultural organizations, which contribute to our quality of life. City of Jacksonville funds are administered by the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville through a competitive and rigorous grant process governed by City ordinance (Chapter 118, Part 6, Ordinance Code of City of Jacksonville)."
It is an honor to be included with all of the other organizations that promote the arts, cultural venues and music - these are things that make Jacksonville an exciting and interesting place to live.

Mandarin Museum (11964 Mandarin Road) is open every Saturday (except Dec. 26) from 9-4 in Walter Jones Historical Park
