HAPPY SUMMER!!!!
OK, well it's almost summer. It's starting to feel like it anyway. At least we don't seem to be heading for another "Juneuary" But it is weather, after all, and who really knows....
On to the really important stuff:
I'D RATHER STAY
The Langley Seniors Community Action Table (LSCAT) is co-sponsoring a screening of the documentary film "I'd Rather Stay" on Monday June 2 at 1:00 PM (short notice, sorry, blame the editor)
at the Fraser River Presentation Centre - 4th Floor of the Township of Langley Civic Centre - 20338 - 65th Avenue.
The film will be followed by a discussion, an opportunity to share your reaction to the film and thoughts about Age-Friendly communities - what works to help seniors stay in their own homes as well as improvements that are needed. Local municipal leaders have been invited to attend and we hope that this event is a great opportunity for learning together about creating age-friendly neighbourhoods and communities.
The event is FREE, but registration is required for planning - please call 604.856.2899 or register on line - RecExpress.ca. If transportation is an issue, please ask about a ride when you register. Transportation is available from Aldergrove, Brookswood/Fernridge, Langley City, Walnut Grove/Fort Langley
TRANSLINK
TransLink has announced what appears to be a significant change in their HandiDart service. Specifically:
"TransLink is committing $1 million to provide over 30,000 taxi trips to help people with disabilities get where they need to go. Our customers want more access, flexibility and independence in travel planning and we've responded, based on last year's successful taxi pilot program.
In addition to providing significant additional taxi trips, the funding will also support safety, service, training and related initiatives to help ensure all of our custom transit customers experience safe and reliable service regardless of the type of vehicle they're travelling in. Taxis will be provided for travel throughout the region to customers whose needs and abilities enable them to take a taxi.
We're also continuing the Custom Transit Service Review to ensure our system can (continue to) meet current demand and expected future growth.
Questions? Please contact Merrilee Ashworth at 778-375-7742 or by email: [email protected]"
I'm glad to see some movement in this direction but I'm also well aware that this is a drop in the bucket. At least more work is being done to improve the service, which is a good thing.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!
Once again, your Society is going into our peak fund raising season and we need volunteers. The usual crew will, of course, be stepping up as they always do, but they can't handle everything alone. If you can spare a couple of hours during any of these events, your help will be deeply appreciated. We need a lot of volunteers. We have a number of events which are designed to get our name and what we do out into the community. Basically we need people to man our booth for several hours at a time to talk to people about what we do and sell raffle tickets to raise money for the society. Please call or email Zosia or Mark with your willingness and availability.

A DAY OF POS-ABILITIES
As most of you know, we will be hosting another "Day of Pos-Abilities", our premier annual showcase event designed to promote understanding, inclusion and enthusiasm about issues that face people with disabilities.
Our "Day of Pos-Abilities" will be held at Douglas Park in Langley on Saturday, July 12, 2014 from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm. We are planning a fun filled and informative day which will include:
* attractive, interesting items for sale,
* a variety of mouth-watering food,
* 6 hours of entertainment - something for everyone,
* a Marketplace area for our sponsors,
* displays from other non-profit organizations and corporations,
* and an area for fun and educational children's activities
Last year was our first attempt at organizing such a large community awareness event and we were pleased with a turnout of over 500 visitors wandering through over 40 different 10'x10' booths.
This year, we expect we will be able to increase those numbers by at least 50% through better advertising and networking. This is where our members, associates and friends can help!
WE STILL NEED VOLUNTEERS, ENTERTAINERS, FOOD VENDORS, BOOTH REGISTRANTS, SPONSORS AND VISITORS!
So if you know of anyone who might consider helping in any of these areas, please have them contact
Mark Ardley 604-532-9637 or
Zosia Ettenberg 604-530-9342
Until we meet at one (or all) of these functions, stay well and enjoy the warm days and sunshine.
