Pastor's Pen

An anthropologist proposed a game for the children of an African tribe. He put a basket of fruit near a tree and told them whoever reached the basket first won its sweet fruits. When we gave them the signal to run they all joined hands and ran together, then sat in a circle enjoying their treats. When he asked why they chose to run as a group when they could have had more fruit individually, one child spoke up and said, "Ubuntu. How can one of us be happy when all the others are sad?"

http://trinidadhunt.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Ubuntu-300x181.jpg

Ubuntu, in the Xhosa culture of South Africa, means "I am because we are."  No one person is any more important than another. If one is happy, all share in their happiness.  If one is sad, all share in their grief. I believe ubuntu describes the church as we all wish it to be.  I believe ubuntu is a way of seeing the church as a place where all are welcome, shown hospitality, accepted and sustained. Paul understood this when he wrote, "We, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members of one another" (Romans 12:5).  I believe ubuntu is the body of Christ honoring  the needs of all, for the good of all.

The first Christians shared their lives with one another.  They were real people meeting real needs; helping one another to survive; sustaining one another; guiding one another through trials and tribulations; and praying for one another.  They shared their lives with one another because in Christ they had everything in common.  We are called to do the same.

So much in this world tells us to strike out on our own - do our own thing. Christians are called to do just the opposite. We are called to band together. We are called to love one another as Christ loved us. We are called to be the body of Christ in the world. How then do we live that call out among God's people?  We open our arms to welcome those who need a safe place.  We open our hearts to those who need understanding and acceptance.  We open our minds to the endless possibilities that come with each new face, each new encounter.   We open ourselves to the future...steeped in faith and ready to act on God's behalf for the love of God's people.    Ubuntu, "I am because we are."

May God's peace be yours,
Dr. Jane
Rev. Shawn Moses Anglim to Preach this Sunday

Many will fondly remember Shawn Anglim and his creativity in the pulpit.  Shawn left the Wesley Foundation ministry in 2006 and moved to New Orleans to minister to two churches who were torn apart and hurting deeply following Hurricane Katrina.  The remnant of First UMC, was an historically white congregation, and the remnant of Grace UMC was an historically black congregation. Working together with the laity of each congregation, Shawn helped them to come together and create what is now known as First Grace United Methodist Church. "First Grace is an urban community of faith embracing all God's children as persons of sacred worth..." First Grace mirrors the diversity of New Orleans and its rich heritage of mingling cultures.  Rev. Anglim will be hosted by Dr. Jane this Sunday, May 29th as he returns to University UMC for our ongoing 75th Anniversary celebration.  Don't miss hearing this dynamic and challenging preacher.

Parents of Young Children to Gather June 5th

We would like to invite all parents of young children to join Dr. Jane and her husband Brian with Jim and Kyle Woolridge for a fellowship event on Sunday, June 5th from 4 -6 pm.  The event will take place at the Woolridge home, 327 Kenilworth Parkway.  There will be an activity for the little ones and dinner will be served.

Please call Kyle in the church office at 344-0343 or email her at  [email protected] to let her know if you will be attending and whether or not you will be bringing your children.

We hope you'll join us for this fun get together!

Youth Choir To Present GODSPELL and Tour this Summer!

Come Celebrate the Story of Jesus on Thursday, June 9th at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. The UUMC Chapel Choir presents Godspell!

The Chapel Choir will help Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a wide variety of games, storytelling techniques, and hefty dose of comic timing. An eclectic blend of songs ranging in style from pop to vaudeville is employed as the story of Jesus' life dances across the stage. The fun and games turn serious as the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, and ultimate Resurrection is portrayed by the band of followers.  Jesus' messages of kindness, tolerance, and love come vibrantly to life.

We hope you will join us! Admission is FREE, but a love offering will be taken to offset the costs of their tour to Colorado.

Kids Hope News

Volunteers are the heartbeat of the Kids Hope program and without them, we simply wouldn't have the quality mentoring program that our church has so faithfully supported now for 15 years.  In looking over my roster of volunteers, I am honestly amazed that 16 people of our church have served with Kids Hope for 5 or more continuous years!  WOW!!  That is incredible!  If you see any of these faithful servants of God, please give them a big hug or pat on the back for a job well done.  They are truly changing the world, one child at a time.

A BIG THANK YOU & A CONTINUED PLEA: HOPE MINISTRIES FOOD PANTRY STILL NEEDS FOOD!
We would like to send a big thank you to all of you in our congregation who brought food last Sunday for HOPE Ministries Food Pantry and to Janis Kile Roux for generously giving of her time to deliver all of the food! This car load of food has definitely helped fill some of the empty shelves.

However, with the kids being out of school for the summer demand for food is even higher than normal! With the the shelves already bare, it's going to take a lot more food to make a dent and fill them up again! SO, we are asking that you continue to bring food EVERY Sunday this summer! We have volunteers ready to deliver the food to HOPE Ministries every week. We know that this will greatly help our local community and allow many of the kids out for summer to get the nourishment that they so desperately need to grow strong and healthy!

Suggestions for items that are needed and easy to purchase in bulk at Sams or Costo:
Canned Meat
Low Sugar Cereals
Pasta and Sauce
Peanut Butter
Canned Vegetables and fruits

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO GIVES SO GENEROUSLY!

NEW CHURCH SIGNAGE

If you have driven by the church this week or been in any of our buildings you may have noticed our new signage! Through the process of trying to make our church campus more accessible it came to the attention of the Trustee's that the signage at our church needed a major overhaul. After many meetings and planning sessions this project is finally being installed!
  • Two weeks ago the new main church sign was installed and we are now currently working to have the tree's trimmed up so that the sign is super visible coming from both directions on Dalrymple.
  • Interior Signage for rooms, bathrooms, exits, etc have been installed this week and we will be working to insert labels into those signs that need them over the next week.
  • Exterior Signage on our buildings and grounds will be installed on June 6th - so watch for this to happen!

UUMC is looking for volunteers to help with Children's Sunday School during the summer!

We need a total of 4 volunteers each Sunday.

Remember, the children of our church are the PRESENT of our church. And without them, we have no future. Please prayerfully consider giving of a Sunday or two in the next few months.

You don't have to a parent to volunteer - just have a willing heart to give and time on a Sunday morning! The lessons and supplies are provided to you and the curriculum is easy to follow. Don't think you can do this? Don't worry - anyone can! Please use the link below to sign up on our online sign up sheet. If you are unable to sign up online you can also do so in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday.

If you have any questions please contact Colleen Puccio, [email protected], who has graciously volunteered her time to help coordinate this effort this summer until our new Children's Ministry Director starts in August!
