Welcome Kathryn Pierce - Aitkin Branch Librarian

ECRL would like to welcome the new Aitkin Branch Librarian,  Kathryn (Katie) Pierce.  Katie succeeds Mary Beth Woodrow who recently retired.

Katie received her Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in August 2015 and has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and International Relations from St. Cloud State University.

While in graduate school, Katie worked in circulation at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee Golda Meir Library and also had an internship in which she developed and led an outreach summer reading program for under-served youth.  Most recently, Katie has been employed as a bookseller by Barnes and Noble in St. Cloud.

Katie is excited about her new position and is looking forward to becoming a part of the Aitkin community.  She started full time in Aitkin on March 11, 2016.  Be sure to stop by the library and welcome her to the community.

Introducing Ebooks Minnesota

READ LOCAL! Ebooks Minnesota is an online eBook collection for all Minnesotans. The collection covers a wide variety of subjects for readers of all ages, and features content from our state's independent publishers, including some of our best literature and nonfiction.

Ebooks MN is a collection featuring content from Minnesota's independent publishers. The collection includes approximately 2,500 titles, with plans to add more soon. eBooks from ABDO, Lerner Publishing Group, and Cherry Lake Publishing make up a significant part of the school-age collection. Ebooks MN also includes scholarly and literary titles from the University of Minnesota Press, Milkweed Editions, Coffee House Press, and Arcadia Publishing/The History Press. These independent presses publish eBooks on a wide variety of topics and genres from sharks to the black death and from graphic novels to literary fiction. Ebooks MN also includes titles about Minnesota, such as Twins Baseball and Legendary Locals of Crookston, that were published outside the state. A selection of popular titles that are in the public domain, such as The Origin of Species and Dracula, rounds out the collection.

You do not need to log in to create an account to use BiblioBoard, if you are using an internet connection in Minnesota. However, if you choose to create a free profile as a Minitex Member, you can use bookmarks, add notes, and download content to the BiblioBoard app on your Android, IOS or Kindle Fire HD. Without the profile, you can access and read these eBooks by streaming online, but you will not be able to save your progress.

Unlimited checkouts, no waiting lists, and there are never any due dates! Happy eReading with Ebooks Minnesota.

Ebooks Minnesota is a joint project of Minitex and the Minnesota Department of Education, State Library Services. The collection was made possible in part by funding from the Minnesota Department of Education through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The initiative originated from the 2014 Explore eBooks MN Summit and from the contributions of librarians across the state.

Staff Reviews

All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr (print, Bk on CD, eBook, eAudio)

This story takes place in Germany and France during the 10 years prior to World War II.  It follows the lives of a young German boy and French girl as they grow up during this time. Both the character development and the historical description are excellent and include enough suspense and surprises to keep you turning the pages.

Miss Fishers Mysteries" (DVD) Series 1, Series 2 & Series 3

This BBC production is "Murder She Wrote" but with a Flapper in Australia as the main character.  Great cast, great story lines and a lot of fun! I would recommend starting with series 1 to understand how she puts together her great sleuthing crew.

Symphony for the City of the Dead: Dmitri Shostakovich and the Siege of Leningrad b y M T Anderson   (TNF)

This biography of the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich was fascinating!  It goes beyond what the title suggests, offering an interesting overview of Russian history from before the Russian Revolution through Stalin's reign of terror. The author successfully intertwines Shostakovich's story in with the larger story of German-Soviet aggression during World War II. Although they initially agreed to a non-aggression pact, Germany invaded Russia and the northern city of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) experienced a 900-day siege where millions died of starvation and disease. If you have any interest in Soviet or World War II history, this is a great book to check out!

Little Boy  (DVD 2015)

A movie about the incredible love a boy has for his father and a father for his son. The setting is during WWII and the father goes off to war. "Little boy" is willing to do whatever it takes to bring his dad home from World War II alive. It's a story of love, faith and perseverance.
