Celebrating new lives and new births at The Redwood!

The Redwood is celebrating the birth of TWO new babies at the shelter this week! Because of your wonderful support, both moms and babies are safe at home, surrounded by a community of love.

You provide new moms with essentials like baby diapers and formula. You ease the burden on mom so she can focus on healing. With you, families are one step closer to leaving violence behind forever.

Read on to hear about all the exciting steps you inspire women and kids to take, every day at The Redwood. You are helping them begin new lives, free from abuse.
You inspire women like Eslyn to leave violence behind forever
"The Redwood helped me through the hardest time in my life."

Eslyn found The Redwood at the darkest point in her life, when she needed it most - and hasn't looked back since.

Your incredible support inspired Eslyn to begin a new life for her and her son, free from abuse. You helped her find her path to safety, and a new career - helping others.

"When I joined Women on the Move, I didn't know what I wanted to do. I began to try new things. Now I'm working in healthcare. I am passionate about working in my community, and caring for the people in it. I know that no matter what happens, I'm only going to go up from here."

You inspire women like Eslyn every day to begin new careers, and new lives - free from violence.

You help women speak up on International Women's Day
Our Community Outreach team was busy visiting high schools and leading presentations this year for International Women's Day!

Ending the cycle of abuse begins with frank discussions. Stephanie and Kristen educated many teens on the importance of supporting and empowering women. Starting these conversations at a young age helps break the cycle of violence before it starts. YOU help us take an active role in educating high school youth.

Your support helps women share their stories and spread the anti-violence message in our communities year-round. Thanks to you, our Women on the Move (WOTM) Leadership Program empowers women to become leaders every day.

You strengthen bonds between moms and kids
Suddenly being a single mother can be a big change, for both moms and kids. You make that change easier.

The Redwood uses our Positive Discipline in Everyday Parenting (PDEP) program to enhance communication between moms and their kids. Our next 12-week program begins on March 21st!

With two new moms and many kids currently at the shelter, there will be lots of women participating.

You can help provide a family with much-needed books and materials for the course, such as the PDEP book used to help break the cycle of violence.

Thank YOU for helping moms and kids live free from violence!
Join us in celebrating 23 years of Anne-Marie's leadership at The Redwood
If you know The Redwood, chances are you know Anne-Marie Gardner: Executive Director, social justice advocate, and passionate leader.

Anne-Marie's energy, spirit and perseverance in ending violence against women is contagious. She gets to know every staff member, volunteer, woman and child that comes through our doors. Her leadership and dedication to social change are truly what make us 'the little shelter that could.'

This year marks her 23rd and final year as Executive Director, but not the end of her lifelong commitment.

Anne-Marie will continue to be at The Redwood until April. Do you have a special story or memory or Anne-Marie you'd like to share with us before she goes? We would love to hear it! Email it to [email protected]  or mail it in to P.O. Box 16023, Toronto, ON, M6J 3W2 attn to: Wendy Bray.

"I imagine a world where all women and children are safe, at home, at work and in their communities. Even though I am leaving my role as E.D., my work here is far from done.

I have left a gift to The Redwood in my will. This is my way of making sure that I continue to be a leader in preventing abuse and ending violence against women. With you, this hope is possible."

- Anne-Marie Gardner

Join Anne-Marie's lifelong pledge to promise that The Redwood will always be here to ensure a future for women and children free from violence. The Redwood celebrates Black History Month!
You help women and kids celebrate a diversity of festivals all year-round at The Redwood.

In February, we honoured the legacy of black Canadians for Black History Month.

Moms, kids, and staff learned about the achievements and contributions of black Canadians. Kids created beautiful artwork and crafts, such as African masks made to disguise and celebrate.

They shared stories, and reflected on the struggles and the successes experienced by so many black Canadians in history. They expressed these struggles and successes through live music and drumming. A big community dinner wrapped up festivities at the end of the month, with lots of yummy Caribbean and African food made by Maureen.

All of this is made possible by YOUR generous support!
