Parent Faculty Club Announces Gift, Officers
Lakehill's Parent Faculty Club (PFC) gathered on Friday for their final General Meeting of the year, chaired by PFC President
Barb Witherite
.
Witherite announced the PFC's annual gift to the school, totaling $110,000. The gift included technology enhancements, contributions to the capital campaign and endowment, furniture and fixtures for the new addition, and a RenWeb parent alert system. In addition, the PFC also sponsored $32,000 of programs for the school, including banquets, Graduation, Field Day, Back-to-School Picnic, and the Halloween Carnival.
The new PFC Executive Committee was also announced.

Class of 2016 Prepares for Graduation
The Class of 2016 stands at the threshold of new beginnings and opportunities, looking forward to the new challenges ahead.
Members of the Senior Class have just completed their two-week internships as part of their graduation requirements and presented a summary of their work to a faculty committee. They will take their final walk across the Lakehill stage on May 27 at 7:30 p.m. in Lakehill's forty-third Commencement Ceremony.
Once again, 100% of Lakehill graduates will continue on to college. Lakehill congratulates the Class of 2016 and wishes them continued success.
Seniors, in the words of Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg, "When the challenges come, I hope you remember that anchored deep within you is the ability to learn and grow. You are not born with a fixed amount of resilience. Like a muscle, you can build it up, draw on it when you need it. In that process you will figure out who you really are - and you just might become the very best version of yourself."

Teams Celebrate Success at Athletic Banquet
It was a time of celebration for the Athletic Department as Lakehill's Upper School teams wrapped up the year with their annual Awards Banquet on May 20 at the Environmental Science Center.
Sponsored by the PFC, the event allowed each athletic team the opportunity to be recognized and also gave coaches, students, and supporters the perfect opportunity to celebrate the season's successes and build momentum for the coming year. Those athletes maintaining strong academic standards were recognized with honor awards.
The Fighting Heart Award, selected by the coaches, is given to two student-athletes who lead by example, display pride, and put the team first, embodying the true spirit of a Lakehill athlete. This year's honorees were
Kaeli Bunger and
Kason Burt.

Baccalaureate Brings Reflection, Thanks
Lakehill's Baccalaureate Ceremony was held on Sunday, May 22 at Lakehill's Alice and Erle Nye Family Environmental Science Center.
A time-honored Lakehill tradition, the ceremony provides an opportunity for each member of the graduating class to publicly thank the people who have made it possible for them to get to this moment of achievement in their lives. The afternoon of thoughtful reflection and heartfelt emotion provided a more intimate opportunity to pause and reflect on this rite of passage.

Cheng Has an App for That
Every year, the Shanghai Association for Science and Technology and the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, join forces with an additional 12 organizations and a general evaluation commission of experts from more than 180 academic societies to sponsor the
Shanghai Adolescents' Science and Technology Innovation Contest.
More than 100,000 students from Shanghai submit their projects with
the hope of being selected for the contest. The contest provides young people throughout the country an opportunity to compete in the fields of natural sciences and engineering, and to exhibit their research projects to the public.
This year, Lakehill junior George Cheng
, working with a team of four graduate students and a professor from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, developed an app for a mobile platform that controls household appliances, such as lamps, televisions, and the refrigerator. When consumers use the app to turn on an appliance, they can also see how much energy they are using and receive recommendations for energy savings.
Cheng, who was the team member responsible for the programming of the app as well the presentation, used a combination of Java and Python to program the app, which runs on ZigBee, a wireless network most often used in home automation and industrial settings.
Cheng placed second overall and r
eceived four different awards in the competition from various companies and universities who were interested in his product
.
He says he will continue to work on his program to improve it, and has already been invited to take part
in several other competitions.
Cheng plans to study computer engineering and mathematics at a U.S. university when he graduates next year.
