Crestwood Elementary School Students Participating in the Springfield Community BridgeWalk
Every year, we bid farewell to summer with a big small town event--the Springfield Community BridgeWalk.  I invite you to join me at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, September 1 when community members, students, scouts, the local business community, families (and leashed dogs), along with our military community will march over Veterans Bridge in the heart of the Springfield revitalization district and hold a community celebration at the American Legion end of the bridge. The celebration features music by the Kings Park Concert Band, food donated from local restaurants, door prizes, community and government displays, and signing of the Army-Community Covenant. As every year, Fort Belvoir will have a significant presence with the Fort Belvoir Garrison Commander Colonel Michelle Mitchell and Fort Belvoir soldiers. Major General Bradley Becker of the Military District of Washington will also join us.

This year's BridgeWalk continues our tradition of renewing the Army/ Community Covenant that began in 2009. The covenant is an affirmation of support by state and local communities to active, guard, and reserve service members and their families.

The BridgeWalk began 14 years ago during reconstruction of the Mixing Bowl when local government, the local business community, the Federal Highway Administration, and the Virginia Department of Transportation worked together to replace plans for a utilitarian highway-type bridge over Old Keen Mill road and created a bridge more attractive and better suited to our community. Veterans Bridge (also known as the Amherst Avenue Bridge) crosses over Old Keene Mill Road and links both sides of Springfield's commercial revitalization area. The bridge is a gateway to central Springfield.  With its acorn lights, wide sidewalks, pedestrian stairway, and attractive façade, it dovetails nicely with the community's vision for a revitalized Springfield and is an attractive gateway to the central business district.

I hope you'll join me next Tuesday!

Lee District Resource Fair At the Franconia Governmental Center

Saturday, September 12

9 am to Noon

Have you ever wondered who in County government can help with a problem? Or wished you could speak to someone face-to-face rather than try to explain by phone, email, or letter? Or wanted a convenient way to ask your question without having to drive to the main government center in Fairfax?

You can do all that at the Lee District Resource Fair on September 12. It's conveniently located at the Franconia Governmental Center at 6121 Franconia Road. County experts from animal control to zoning and everything in between will be there to answer your questions and provide helpful tips. There's no need to make a reservation--just come with your questions and concerns. My staff and I will also be there.

 Agencies participating include:

  • Animal Control
  • Cable and Consumer Affairs
  • Code Compliance/Zoning
  • Fairfax County Department of Transportation
  • Virginia Department of Transportation
  • Stormwater Management
  • Office of Emergency Management
  • Health Department
  • Police
  • Solid Waste

Ride the Bus to School

Our County Department of Transportation in coordination with Fairfax County Public Schools has launched a free student bus pass pilot program and Edison High School is one of the participating schools.

I'm excited about this program and will have more information for you in an upcoming issue. This new program should provide flexible transportation options and expand the benefits of public transit while maximizing our transportation infrastructure, minimizing car trips, and reducing traffic.

Thank you for subscribing to my monthly e-newsletter. I hope these updates will keep you in the loop with some of the major events in our District.

If you'd like to learn more about something in the newsletter or have an idea for a future edition, please don't hesitate to contact me or my staff.

Sincerely,

Did You Know?
Question:
What's the difference between a sidewalk and a trail and how do I find out who maintains them?

Answer: Fairfax County's walkway system includes  sidewalks, trails, and pedestrian bridges, along with their associated steps, handrails, handicapped ramps or signs.

Sidewalks in the public street right-of-way (i.e., alongside public roads) generally are maintained either by the Virginia Department of Transportation (1-800-FOR-ROAD) or the County's  Maintenance & Stormwater Management Division (703-877-2800). All public sidewalks built before 1981 are maintained by the state. Sidewalks along private roads, as in many homeowner/civic associations or commercial properties, are the property owner responsibility.

Maintenance of trails (generally asphalt, stone dust, wood chip or natural surface) and pedestrian bridges may fall under different authorities such as the state, the county, Fairfax County Public Schools, Fairfax County Park Authority, the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority, homeowner/civic associations, or private property owners.

For more information about the County's walkways click here.

You can also find out about who is responsible for maintenance of a sidewalk, trail, or pedestrian bridge, by submitting the  online Walkway Maintenance Request Form here or call the
Maintenance & Stormwater Management Division at 703-877-2800. Of course you can always call my office at 703-971-6262 if you have any questions.
