Super Bowl LV just the beginning for Rams' Inglewood stadium


The NFL announced Tuesday that the  Los Angeles Rams' forthcoming Inglewood stadium will host Super Bowl LV in 2021. For anyone paying attention throughout the relocation process and, especially, during the team's relocation announcement, that news didn't come as a surprise.

That's because Rams' owner Stan Kroenke's $2.6 billion stadium and development project will become the most lavish stadium project in North American sports the day it opens. Tuesday's Super Bowl announcement was a mere formality, but perhaps more important, it's also all but certain to be just the first of many such declarations in the coming years.

"Los Angeles is built to host the Super Bowl," Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti said in a statement. "We helped forge this great American tradition as its very first host in 1967 and now, at long last, we're bringing it back where it belongs. L.A. is already welcoming a record number of visitors from around the world and Super Bowl LV will bring even more economic prosperity to our region."

Four months after giving the Rams the green light to return to Los Angeles,  NFL  owners on Tuesday awarded the city the right to host the Super Bowl  in early 2021, after an absence of 28 years.

The game will be played at the soon-to-be built $2.6-billion Inglewood stadium, which is scheduled to open for the 2019 season.

In what could be a first, L.A. - in head-to-head competition with Tampa - received a super-majority consensus in the first round of voting. That means it got at least 24 of 32 votes on the secret ballot. The league does not disclose the  exact results because the process pits owner against owner. Atlanta was awarded the game in 2019 and South Florida in 2020. 

New Orleans and Tampa were unsuccessful in their bids. The next two Super Bowls will be played in Houston and Minneapolis.

"I think it's very much a reflection of the excitement the ownership has for returning to Los Angeles, and the importance of having a Super Bowl back there after several decades," NFL Commissioner  Roger Goodell said. "We're all interested in coming back with a great deal of enthusiasm."

Los Angeles' new Inglewood stadium to host Super Bowl LV in 2021


First, Inglewood lured the Rams back to the Southland, and Tuesday, the National Football League announced the city will play host to Super Bowl LV in February 2021.

Meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina, NFL owners chose host cities for three upcoming Super Bowls, choosing Atlanta as the host of Super Bowl LII in February 2019, Miami for Super Bowl LIV in February 2020 and the Los Angeles area for the 2021 game.

The game will be played at the Rams' $1.86 billion stadium which is scheduled to open in 2019 at the former site of Hollywood Park racetrack.

Houston will host the Super Bowl next year, followed by Minnesota in 2018.



Fans cheer as massive space shuttle fuel tank ET-94 crawls along LA streets


The last flight-ready external fuel tank in NASA's space shuttle program squeezed around a final bend Saturday evening to the California Science Center, greeted by cheers from onlookers some 18 hours after its road trip began.

Like they did throughout the tank's nearly flawless journey from Marina del Rey and through Inglewood and South Los Angeles, crowds gawked and memorialized the moment with photos, all the while sharing memories of the shuttle program and stories about External Tank-94, the name given NASA's 94th fuel tank.

"It's External Tanks 94!" shouted 5-year-old Antonio Alamillo, as the massive orange, cigar-shaped structure squeezed around its last corner before arriving at its final destination. "The tank and the boosters get thrown into the ocean. But it's coming here to meet Endeavour."
