College Signing Day

On Tuesday, April 26th, "I Have a Dream" seniors joined students from around the country to celebrate National College Signing Day. The initiative, pioneered by First Lady Michelle Obama, encourages seniors to announce which colleges and universities they will attend. The First Lady encouraged seniors to post their colleges selfies on social media along with the hashtags #bettermakeroom and #reachhigher.

In Boulder, 22 seniors who are part of the collaboration between "I Have a Dream," Boulder Valley School District and Boulder Housing Partners participated in College Signing Day. The Adelante Program at Boulder High School  hosted a College Signing Day party, during  which school administrators, teachers,  counselors and supporters cheered on  seniors as they made their announcements.

Supporting the Whole Dreamer with "Body-Brain Savvy" Training

"Body-Brain Savvy": Supporting the Whole Dreamer, is a neuro-development
basics  training which was created for our program staff in response to bourgeoning research about the impacts of poverty on brain development. Our Wellness Program Coordinator, Leslie McCormick, developed and facilitated the trainings, in which participants learned about the impact of missed developmental opportunities and early trauma on neural development, including children's ability to empathize, self-regulate, filter sensory input, communicate, and learn. Participants learned why movement and play--the developing brain's "oxygen" and "water"--are essential to children's physical, psychological, emotional, social, and intellectual heath. Over time, as our program staff integrates this trauma-informed, neuro-developmental approach into program planning and in-the-moment decision-making, Dreamers will experience increases in vitality, intrinsic motivation, social skills, positive affect, and even cognitive abilities--all necessary ingredients for health and academic success!

About the "I Have a Dream" Foundation of Boulder County
Since 1990, the award-winning "I Have a Dream" Foundation of Boulder County has assisted 800 children from low-income areas in achieving their education and career goals by providing long-term personal and academic support, tutoring, mentoring and four-year tuition-assistance scholarships to each graduating student. The organization sponsors entire groups of students from elementary schools or from low-income housing sites and works with these children and their families from elementary school through high school graduation and then "to and through" college. Currently, there are seven active "I Have a Dream" classes in Boulder County, with three classes in Boulder, two in Longmont and two in Lafayette. The "I Have a Dream" Foundation of Boulder County has doubled expected graduation rates for its graduating classes of students and has awarded $2 million in scholarships. The program follows the national model established in New York in 1981 by founder Eugene Lang.
