Diocesan clergy gathered yesterday at St. James' Church, Newport for our first clergy event of the new program year.  The theme for our day was special ministry to those with mental illness and other disabilities.  We were building awareness both of the opportunities and needs in our own congregations and in the communities around us.  Our recent Diocesan Convention passed a resolution encouraging us to engage in the ministry of compassion and awareness.

Deacon Susan Phillips spoke about her work to provide support for families and caregivers in the Lewes/Rehoboth area.  A representative of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) gave a presentation on programs and resources in Delaware.  Sarah Nelson, St. James' rector, shared their partnership with Easter Seals to serve this community.  St. James' sponsors a weekly worship service for those with special needs.  At lunchtime we all participated in this service as part of the clergy day.  It was an impressive and moving event.

On Wednesday evening I am traveling to Memorial House to join our deacons for their annual fall retreat.  Each of our deacons is involved in unique ministries of Christian service.  By their example they encourage each of us to do the same.  As Jesus himself said, "the greatest among you is the one who serves."

On Thursday I will be joining St. Anne's Episcopal School for their annual Founder's Day celebration.   I always enjoy returning to St. Anne's.  It is an outstanding school and a wonderful place for children to learn and grow.  To learn more about St. Anne's have a look at their website.

This coming Sunday I will be visiting Christ Church, Milford.

Faithfully,

Legal issues in Episcopal split going to SC Supreme Court
CHARLESTON, S.C. -  South Carolina's highest court this week hears arguments in the legal fight stemming from the acrimonious split in the Episcopal Church in eastern South Carolina.  The conservative Diocese of South Carolina, dating to 1785 and one of the original dioceses that joined to form the Episcopal Church, left the national church in 2012 amid differences over theological issues, including the authority of Scripture and the ordination of gays.       Read complete article
