OSHA Issues New Rule to Require Electronic Reporting of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses
OSHA has issued a
final rule that will require all establishments with 250 or more employees in industries covered by the current recordkeeping regulation to electronically submit to OSHA injury and illness information from OSHA Forms 300, 300A, and 301. Establishments with 20-249 employees in
certain industries must electronically submit information from OSHA Form 300A only.
This includes the LBM sector. These are new annual reporting requirements, with phased-in deadlines highlighted below.
The new annual electronic reporting requirements are effective January 1, 2017, with a phased-in schedule based on the size of the establishment. For the calendar year 2017, establishments with 250 or more employees and those with 20-249 employees must submit Form 300A by July 1, 2017. For calendar year 2018 and thereafter, establishments with 250 or more employees must submit Forms 300A, 300 and 301 by July 1, 2018. Establishments with 20-249 employees are only required to file Form 300A. Beginning with calendar year 2019, the reporting deadlines will be moved from July 1 to March 2.

Annual Commercial Truck Inspection Scheduled for June
The 29
th annual International Roadcheck will take place June 7-9. Organized by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), this year's initiative will focus on tire safety.
Inspectors will be measuring tire tread depth, checking tire pressure, checking to make sure no items are lodged between dual tires and examining the overall condition of the tires to ensure no deep cuts or bulges exist in the sidewalls. Checking tires is part of a normal inspection, but CVSA is highlighting tire safety as a reminder to drivers and carriers.
According to the CVSA, approximately 10,000 certified local, state, provincial and federal inspectors will perform truck and bus inspections throughout North America during the three-day period.

June 1, 2016 is the Final Implementation Deadline for Employer Compliance with HazComm 2012
By June 1, 2016, employers are required to update any alternative workplace labeling of containers with covered hazardous chemicals, update their hazard communication program as necessary (which includes making all required Safety Data Sheets accessible to all workers), and provide additional employee training for newly identified physical or health hazards. These are also considered on-going compliance obligations.
If an employer uses alternative workplace labeling, the labeling must comply with the new HazComm 2012 requirements. Furthermore, if an employer identifies new hazards based on the information found on the new labels and SDSs, the employer must update its hazard communications plan by the June 1, 2016 deadline.

Death Rate Rises in U.S. Workplaces
Workers age 55 and older accounted for 35 percent of all workplace deaths in 2014, and the 1,691 deaths for this age group was the highest ever recorded, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The report indicates that workers age 65 and older are three times more likely than other workers to die on the job, and falls are the main cause of death for older workers.
The report also reveals that workplace deaths rose 5.1 percent from 4,585 in 2013 to 4,821 in 2014, and the death rate edged up 0.1 percent over the same period.

Rising Temperatures will Soon be Approaching
With the first official day of summer being less than a month away, we can expect to see an increase in temperatures. Employers and employees need to pay attention to their bodies if working outside in the hot, humid heat. Understand the signs of things like dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke to ensure necessary precautions are being taken. Here are three hot facts you need to know:
1. Heat is the deadliest weather event - killing an average of 658 people a year in the US
2. According to NASA, when the temperature reaches 95 degrees work output drops by 45%.
3. You are at danger of heatstroke at temperatures over 80 degrees with a humidity level of 75%.
