Dear Readers,

I'll be teaching at a new location next month - San Diego Botanical Gardens on August 13, and will be returning to teach at Golden West Community College in Huntington Beach on July 30.  More info is located under "classes" at the bottom of this newsletter.

This month's newsletter is primarily covering events and places in southern California.  I apologize in advance to all my readers who live outside this area.

As everyone in the Southwest knows, we have a serious water crisis.  For anyone who might be interested in learning ways to conserve water and how to landscape with water-wise plants, there is a beautiful and very informative educational garden in San Diego dedicated to teaching how to landscape with drought tolerant plants and much more.

The Water Conservation Garden is composed of a series of demonstration garden spaces that showcase drought-tolerant plants from around the world and the many different garden styles possible with this expansive plant palette.   Plants from the xeric eco-regions of the world are represented including California, South Africa, Australia, Chile, and the Mediterranean.

The mission of The Water Conservation Garden is to educate and inspire through exhibits and programs that promote water conservation and the sustainable use of related natural resources.  They have nearly six acres that showcase water conservation through a series of beautifully themed gardens, such as a native plant garden and a vegetable garden, as well as how-to displays such as mulch and irrigation exhibits. The Garden also features a native butterfly pavilion (small admission fee) that is open spring and summer each year and also showcases the plants that provide their nectar.

Admission to the Gardens is free.  How many places are free these days?!  And dogs are welcome (except in the Butterfly Pavilion).

The Garden offers many programs including classes o n topics such as art, water-wise gardening, landscaping, plus Ms. Smarty-Plants™ Youth Education Program, plus festivals and plant sales.

It's that time of year to prune lavender, so to celebrate I'm offering my "Creating with Fresh Lavender - Wreaths and Basketmaking" DVD at a 40% discount!!!  Regular price $29.99, sale price $17.99.

Now you can learn how to use all those beautiful, fragrant lavender cuttings to make lovely craft projects. You can see a clip from the video here

Lavender should  be pruned twice per year, in the late summer and during the early spring to keep the plant healthy and to encourage full growth. In late summer, when the flowers are just about faded, you trace back the flower stalks back to the new shoots and trim them off with a pair of shears. Here's a short but very informative video on how to trim lavender......

BOOK RECOMMENDATION

Basic Pine Needle Basketry by Judy Mulford

For those of us who have coiled for a long time, we are very familiar with this superb book. But I know a lot of people have discovered coiling in the past few years and may not be familiar with this out-of-print book, which is still available from time to time on-line.   For us longtime coilers, we consider this book the bible on coiling.  The author, Judy Mulford, founder and past president of the Los Angeles Basket Guild,  handwrote the entire book in her exquisite penmanship.  Her passion for the artform exudes from every delightful page.  There are photographs to inspire, extremely clear instructions and hand-drawn diagrams, tree identification and much more.  Judy published the book in a small format to fit in a weaver's backpack, and spiral-bound so it could lie flat for reading.  It's a "must" for any coiler's private library.

CLASSES Classes

BEGINNING PINE NEEDLE
BASKET WEAVING

In this introductory class students will start a pine needle basket around a polished stone cabochon. The swirling stitch is taught with a unique method that lines up stitches on both sides of the basket, making the vessel attractive on the inside as well as the outside. Students also learn how to shape their basket and how to taper down and finish the final coil. The coiling method can later be used to weave other plant materials including sweetgrass, palm inflorescence and leaves from a wide variety of common plants. Repeat students are invited to attend to learn more advanced techniques as time permits.

NADINE'S HOME STUDIO WORKSHOPS

The home workshops are kept small to provide a generous amount of individual instruction tailored to each student's skill level and interest such as: Learning how to coil a basket, or for more experienced students, shaping of vessels, novel starts such as walnut slices or other objects with holes, beaded centers, fancy stitches (wheat stitch, diamond stitch, fern stitch, inserting beads between coils using the mariposa stitch) handles, teneriffe, lidded vessels, sculptural techniques, and much more!

Both beginning and experienced basket weavers are welcome. Show 'n Share is a fun part of the workshop, so please bring any baskets you've made to share with the group.
Since enrollment is kept small, early registration is recommended. Email Nadine [email protected] to verify there's an opening, then send a check with a note specifying which class date you want to attend. Students are welcome to bring their own materials (pine needles must be washed and dried) or a started basket; supplies are always available for purchase in class.
