Calling All Singers!

To kick off the Gala Celebration of Temple Sinai's 50th Anniversary on June 24,we'll be doing a performance of  Come Inside: A Midrash on Genesis 18:1  directed by the composer, our own Bruce Chalmer.

Based musically and midrashically on the first verse of Parshat Vayera (Gen. 18:1), Come Inside is a commentary on the development of liberal Judaism: rooted in tradition, but grafting together traditional and modern elements into a living organism.

We need singers in all parts (SATB). You don't have to be able to read music--recordings of each part are available online.

Rehearsals will be at Temple on the following Wednesday evenings at 7:00pm: May 25, June 1, June 15, and June 22, plus a rehearsal at 3:30pm the afternoon of the performance, Friday June 24.  Please contact Bruce ([email protected]) and let him know you're in!

Social Action Project | Sophie Dauerman

Earlier this year, my friend Lena and I (Sophie Dauerman) entered a project in Vermont History Day. Our exhibit was about Women Resisting the Taliban. Having won first place in our division, we are now heading to D.C. in the beginning of June for National History Day.

To continue our work, we have decided to raise money for an organization called School of Leadership, Afghanistan (SOLA). It is the first and only girls' boarding school in Afghanistan. The founder, Shabana Basij-Rasikh, is a Middlebury graduate and an amazing woman. We were lucky to have the opportunity to skype with her recently!

To raise money, we are hosting a 24-hour read-a-thon to raise awareness and funds for girls in Afghanistan who have to read in private in fear of the Taliban.

Please consider taking action in one of the following ways:
  1. Be a guest reader in the Shelburne Town Hall activity room May 28-29 to help us keep our 24-hour streak going strong.
  2. Donate to our campaign to support School of Leadership, Afghanistan (SOLA) - a school for girls founded by Middlebury College graduate, Shabana Basij-Rasikh.
  3. Do us a favor, send this along to someone who you think will be curious about this project.
  4. Appreciate the educational opportunities that we have for every race, religion,  economic class, and gender in our country.
To learn more about our work and to take action, please visit our site by clicking here.
