PMA Cruise Day 2016
Presentation of Mary Academy  ePathways

May 2016
PMA Friends and Family,

Can you believe the school year is almost over?  The seniors are already done with classes and will graduate at the end of this week.  The underclassmen are in the midst of their last semester but that doesn't mean things are boring around PMA.  This month we celebrated the class of 2020 with a welcome night.   The PMA Penny Wars pitted homeroom against homeroom to raise money for a sister school in Cameroon.  The school held our annual Spring Concert and Art Show.  And the students had the opportunity to dress to impress at the freshman/sophomore Semi Formal or the junior/senior Prom.

PMA Today
Welcome Class of 2020

On Wednesday, May 11 our newest Panthers celebrated their achievements over dinner and dessert with their  families in our Dupre Center.  Student Ambassadors led the incoming freshmen in "get-to-know-me games."

St. Andrew's Dinner

Tuesday, May 10, P MA Campus Minister, Francis Stanton, accompanied several PMA young men to the annual St. Andrew's Dinner for an evening of prayer, food and conversation.  The attendees heard from a number of seminarians and their personal stories of how they grew in their faith and came to discern God's call for them to join the priesthood.  Cardinal Sean O'Malley also spoke and encouraged the young men to be open to their vocation and even if they are not called to the priesthood, to encourage those who might be so that we can continue to regularly experience the sacraments.

The young men enjoyed the dinner and open conversation and even had some fun taking selfies with Cardial Sean after the talk.

Penny Wars
Every penny makes a difference.

In the weeks leading up to April vacation and for a couple days after, NHS conducted Penny Wars. In Penny Wars, homerooms are pitted against one another to see not who can raise the most money, but who will have the largest ratio of pennies to silver change. Pennies are a positive value and silver coins are negative, so homerooms try to collect pennies for themselves, while they sabotage others by dropping quarters, nickels, and dimes into their containers. Mrs. MacGregor's homeroom was the clear winner; they amassed over five thousand pennies, but only three dimes. Sister Sue's homeroom, however, acquired almost two hundred dollars (mostly in silver change),  everyone teamed up to make sure she didn't win. All together, we raised more than $500, which will be sent to a school in Cameroon that is run by the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary. This school serves 400 students, teaching them vocations and trades. It desperately needs books and computers to help the students achieve a better quality of life for themselves and their community.
National Spanish Exam
PMA earned a total of 6 silver and 7 bronze medals along with 12 honorable mentions in the 2016 National Spanish Exam.   "Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious," said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, "because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with over 160,000 students participating in 2016."

The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year in grades 6 through 12, and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
Catholic School Foundation Scholarship Evening
Thursday, May 19,   Cardinal Sean  O'Malley  celebrated Mass at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston for Catholic Schools Foundation scholars, their teachers and families. Each year the Catholic Schools Foundation offers financial support to  PMA  families who have sacrificed to make Catholic education a priority for their child.  Special recognition was made of our graduating seniors and our incoming freshmen.

Two of our graduating seniors and Catholic School Foundation recipients, Edwin Robles and Patrich Roque, are pictured with Cardinal Sean O'Malley at the scholarship evening.
