CITY HEALTH DEPARTMENT NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED FOR ABILITY TO RESPOND TO PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCIES

NEW ORLEANS - Today, the City of New Orleans Health Department (NOHD) announced that it was recognized by the National Association of County & City Health Officials' Project Public Health Ready (PPHR) program for the department's ability to plan for, respond to and recover from public health emergencies. NOHD's emergency preparedness program plans for and responds to all public health emergencies in New Orleans including natural disasters, disease outbreaks, mass casualty incidents and more. Additionally, they monitor the availability of public health and medical services and provide evacuation or sheltering assistance to medically vulnerable populations.

"I thank Project Public Health Ready for this esteemed recognition," said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. "In New Orleans, we understand the importance of emergency preparedness and the consequences that can arise from not having a plan in place. That is precisely the reason that City agencies like the Health Department work year-round to ensure that our residents are safe and prepared in the event of an emergency."

"We are committed to continuing to strengthen our ability to bring quality public health services to New Orleans in partnership with our community," said New Orleans Health Director Charlotte Parent. "This recognition is proof of that commitment, and we are pleased to join the ranks of nearly 450 local health departments that have been Project Public Health Ready recognized."

PPHR is a training and recognition program that assesses preparedness and assists local health departments to respond to emergencies. The criteria are national standards for local public health preparedness and are updated annually to incorporate the most recent federal initiatives. Each of the three PPHR project goals-all-hazards preparedness planning, workforce capacity development, and demonstration of readiness through exercises or real events-has a comprehensive list of standards that must be met in order to achieve PPHR recognition.

New Orleans was one of 30 local or regional health agencies recognized this year. The PPHR status lasts for five years, and agencies have the opportunity to be re-recognized after that time period.

Now open: Exhibition exploring history of 18th-and 19th-century currency

WHO:             The Historic New Orleans Collection

WHAT:           "Money, Money, Money! Currency Holdings from The Historic New Orleans Collection," a new exhibition

WHEN:           On view May 24-October 29, 2016

Tuesday - Saturday 9:30am - 4:30pm
WHERE:        THNOC's Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres St. in the French Quarter

HOW:             Admission is free. For more information, visit www.hnoc.org or call (504) 523-4662.

WHY:              The Historic New Orleans Collection's holdings include a trove of historically significant pieces related to this region's economic history. The museum's latest exhibition, "Money, Money, Money! Currency Holdings from The Historic New Orleans Collection," invites visitors to explore more than 200 coins, paper notes, printing plates, political cartoons, counterfeit detectors, paintings and interactive features. These items demonstrate the numerous, sometimes bizarre, incarnations of money in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Prior to the Civil War, currency in the United States lacked cohesion. States, banks, companies, towns and all but two of Louisiana's parishes printed their own notes. From railroads to the Confederate treasury, institutions used money as a cultural canvas to illustrate their values. The currency on display depicts agriculture and industry, noted figures and even fantastic creatures such as mermaids. The imagery is sure to intrigue both the causal onlooker and the devoted collector.
The exhibition allows visitors to trace more than a century of tumultuous Louisiana history through the lens of currency. Notes connected to the rise of the French Company of the Indies, which ran the Louisiana colony from 1717 to 1731, and examples of Spanish coinage reflect early, often illicit inter-imperial trade. In the 19th century, with Louisiana's shift from colonial outpost to economic center, New Orleans's importance becomes evident in paper bills from banks that, with their enviable location on the Mississippi River, held prominent positions in local, national and international cotton and sugar markets. The cataclysmic effects of Civil War-era inflation are suggested by the many examples of local currency that ballooned, then dwindled during Reconstruction, when federal taxation on the printing of extra-national notes limited production.
"Money, Money, Money!" concludes with an early federal bill reminiscent of what's in visitors' own pockets-a codified currency with uniform qualities and unequivocally American symbolism.

"If you don't know where you are going, you'll end up someplace else" - Yogi Berra

Budgeting for Success is a presentation from the Society of Louisiana CPAs and represented by local CPAs who listen and help their clients build stronger companies. Effective budgeting is a collaborative process that enables business owners to better understand today's financial performance and achieve future goals. This session will help business owners understand the importance of budgeting and create budgets that let you manage, monitor, and achieve your goals. Our session plans to address the following questions and provide interactive discussions on practical issues regarding the budgeting process.
    • I prepare budgets today, but how can I get better results? Creating the budget is one thing; understanding and using the budget is another. Budgets can be used in other business processes (risk assessment, bank lending, benchmarking, forecasting, return on investment, etc.).
    • How often should I prepare and review my budget? Budgets should contain appropriate details, yet be simple enough to use on frequent basis.
    • Who should be involved in the budgeting process? Budgeting is a collaborative process that should involve all stakeholders at appropriate levels. CPAs and outside advisors can provide useful insight and accountability in the budgeting process.

Back by "Popular" demand. Variety calls Wicked "a cultural phenomenon," and it continues to break box office records and sell out in record time. Winner of over 100 international awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards, Wicked is "Broadway's biggest blockbuster" (The New York Times).

Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One-born with emerald green skin-is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good makes for "the most complete-and completely satisfying-new musical in a long time" (USA Today).

Mayor Landrieu's Office of Economic Development to Host Business Information Sessions

NEW ORLEANS - Mayor Mitch Landrieu's Office of Economic Development will kick off another series of Business Information Sessions designed to connect local entrepreneurs and business owners with useful tools and resources to grow their businesses.

"These quarterly sessions are key to helping our local business owners and entrepreneurs thrive," said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. "When our businesses succeed, our economy gets stronger, more residents gain jobs and we grow the tax base that pays for essential City services."

Giving business owners knowledge and connecting them to the right resources not only helps them to grow, but I t helps the community, as a whole.  It is a win across the board."

CITY TO HOST NEW ORLEANS SUMMER CAREER PATHWAYS PROGRAM ORIENTATION

NEW ORLEANS - the City's Network for Economic Opportunity and JOB1 will kick off its New Orleans Summer Career Pathways Program orientation to provide training and employment opportunities in the advanced manufacturing and energy sectors.

In October 2014, the U.S. Department of Labor committed $8.2 million to support workforce development and training in New Orleans. Of that, a $5.8 million competitive grant went to the City of New Orleans Office of Workforce Development and a $2.4 million grant went to Delgado Community College for workforce development.

The City has leveraged the grant to improve the delivery of workforce training services, facilitate cooperation across federal, state and local workforce programs and funding streams and expand partnerships within industry sectors to develop programs that reflect current and future skill needs.

The City's Office of Workforce Development is working with a variety of training providers and community partners and organizations to customize training programs for local workers interested in obtaining certification in trades in the advanced manufacturing and energy sectors. In addition to education and skill training, participants will be provided with the wrap-around supportive services needed to increase completion and experience in real work settings to gain nationally recognized industry certifications.

. Each orientation will last from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Career training will be offered in industrial maintenance, electrical and pipefitting.

New Orleans, LA 70127

In September 2014, the Mayor launched the Economic Opportunity Strategy to connect disadvantaged job seekers and businesses to new opportunities.

Both grants, as part of Department of Labor's Workforce Innovation Fund, seek to improve job training programs across the country. Delgado was one of 270 community colleges around the country who received a total of $450 million in federal job-driven training grants. This funding was part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) competitive grant program, which is co-administered by the Department of Labor and Department of Education.

Women Standing Up Announces Inaugural Crime Camera Installation

NEW ORLEANS -  Working to stop the escalation of violent crime in Algiers, Women Standing Up (WSU) has partnered with the New Orleans Police Department to install crime cameras in various "hot spots" across the community. The organization will make a formal announcement of the installation of those cameras with a press conference this Thursday, May 26, at 11:00 a.m. on the corner of Seine Court and Garden Oaks Drive in Algiers. WSU, along with Algiers elected officials, members of the clergy, and other partners will participate in the announcement.

"This initiative is in keeping with our mission of improving the quality of life for families living in the New Orleans area," said organization president Sandra Wilson. "We believe this will be the first step of many towards achieving that goal."

Five cameras have already been installed at residential and business location in the Seine/Garden Oaks area as part of the group's Crime Camera District initiative. The cameras are part of the ProjectNOLA network, and will provide real-time video to the NOPD, assisting in criminal investigations and serving as a crime deterrent.

Women Standing Up plans to continue is collaboration with NOPD to identify other areas in need of assistance. WSU has established partnerships with neighborhood associations, homeowners, churches, and businesses in an effort to develop long-term solutions to addressing the city's crime epidemic.

Founding member Roberta Brown added, "We cannot sit on the sidelines as our community deals with crime all around us. Instead we stand up to be a part of the solution. It isn't enough to talk about the problem in our homes and to each other; we must tackle it head on.

A native of New Orleans, Veronica's early years were spent in a warm Christian environment with positive role models and achievers from whom she drew inspiration and encouragement. As a member of St. Monica Catholic Church, it was here that the first indications of her musical talents and natural leadership were nurtured. Tasting Notes
With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Love New Orleans & She'll Love You Back.

Sincerely,

Frank Stansbury
