Compared to January 2015, the January 2016 Tulare County Employment Report shows a decrease in the unemployment rate and an increase in employment. Additional highlights from the recent report include:
  • Tulare County's unemployment rate was 12.3 percent in January 2016, down from the year-ago estimate of 13.7 percent and up from a revised 12.2 percent in December 2015. 
  • The industries with the largest month-over growth include Farm and Educational & Health Services. The industry with the largest month-over decline in jobs is Retail Trade.

 HOW DOES TULARE COUNTY's UNEMPLOYMENT RATE COMPARE TO THE STATE's OVER TIME?




The California Employment Development Department (EDD) reported a 0.1 percent increase in Tulare County's unemployment rate, from 12.2 percent in December 2015 to 12.3 percent in January 2016. From December to January, Tulare County typically experiences a slight increase in the unemployment rate due  to a seasonal decrease in agricultural jobs. The month over month increase  of .1 percent in 2016 is lower than the 10-year December to January   approximate  average of 1 percent. The January 2016 unemployment rate is the lowest rate experienced in a January since 10.1 percent in 2006, and is down from a recession high of 19.1 percent in January 2011.

HOW MANY JOBS HAVE COME AND GONE IN THE LAST YEAR & THE LAST MONTH?



   

From January 2015 to January 2016, 
Transportation, Warehousing & Utilities experienced the greatest gain, adding 800 jobs to the region. On a percentage basis, Transportation, Warehousing & Utilities grew by 13 percent, and both Construction and Local Government, Education declined by 100.







The industry with the largest month-over employment gain was Farm. Retail Trade showed the largest decline with the loss of 800 jobs. On a percentage basis, Farm is up 3 percent in January and Local Government, primarily education is down 5 percent.
