Food Distribution Helps Families in West Nassau County
Volunteers in Callahan help with the food distribution

Monday, February 15, 2016 was a busy day in Callahan as the Farm Share truck pulled up in front of the Barnabas Office on Mickler Street to distribute fresh food to families in need from West Nassau County.  102 households were served with groceries that included potatoes, cucumbers, cabbage and dry goods.  22 volunteers helped to distribute over 11,000 pounds to families who were grateful for the assistance.  Phil St. Laurent, Chief Operations Officer for Barnabas commented, "Thanks to Farm Share and the many volunteers who showed up to help, we were able to distribute thousands of pounds of food to hungry families.  The appreciation expressed by the people who benefited from the food distribution event was genuine.  We hope to provide more food distribution events in the months to come".  Farm Share brings in food from farms and wholesale distributors from all over North Florida and works with Florida farmers to prevent food waste and distribute healthy food.  Thanks Farm Share!

Adult Bikes for Barnabas Helps Many "Gear Up" for Success

Recently a client named Mr. B sought help at Barnabas for transportation after a friend suggested he go to Barnabas. After an interview with a case manager, Mr. B received a bike from the ABB program. Six days a week, Mr. B hops on his bike and completes the trip from his home to his job as a cashier and stocker at Fred's in about 15 minutes. "It used to take an hour to walk," he recalled. He also uses the bicycle to shop for groceries and to go to church. "Now I've got a job, a place to live, some money - and I've got transportation," he said. But even if a car is in his future, Mr. B will never give up his bike. "I'll keep it as a trophy," he said. "Just to remind me."

The Adult Bikes for Barnabas program is a partnership with the Cycling & Fitness Center and Amelia Island Trail Team that takes donated bikes and refurbishes them to help those in need with transportation. Many thanks to Phil Scanlan, Joel Beckham and generous donors for their support in making this program a success.

Delta Dental Provides Critical Support to Dental Program
Representatives from Delta Dental Community Care Foundation recently visited and toured the dental program to present a check for $5,000 as part of a $10,000 grant to support the life-changing dental work happening at Barnabas.  The dental program is part of Barnabas Centers' comprehensive health services that are available to adults in Nassau County who have lower incomes and lack health insurance.  The dental program helped restore and maintain oral health for 660 men and women last year through 1,773 visits. Barnabas President and CEO, Wanda Lanier remarked, "We are so very grateful to the Delta Dental Community Care Foundation for these critical funds that are helping our  patients restore their dental health, build their self-esteem and literally, change their lives".

Nassau County Poverty Simulation Brings Awareness and Advocacy
Could you face a month of poverty?  More than 70 men and women participated in a Poverty Simulation event on Friday, February 12 at the FSCJ Nassau Center.  Twenty volunteers assisted with providing scenarios for the participants to understand how to navigate poverty with circumstances that included: losing a job, facing a severe health crisis, single parenting, losing housing and how to access social services.  The purpose of the experience was to help participants understand the "many faces of poverty" and to realize the difficult struggles a typical
low-income family encounters trying to survive from month to month.  The event was coordinated by the United Way of Northeast Florida and Barnabas in partnership with local Nassau County nonprofit organizations.
