The OWFL Executive Council is very excited to announce that Team Ontario U19 Women’s Field Lacrosse team will be competing in the Canadian Lacrosse Association U19 Women’s Field Invitational National, in Coquitlam, British Columbia, July 8 – 11, during the FIL U19 Men’s Field World Cup.
There will be a number of teams participating in the women’s event, from the U.S. and Canada. Only Canadian teams will be eligible to be declared the National Champion which will be determined based on play from the 4 CLA Member Association team entries – Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and First Nations.
This is the first event of its kind, since the inception of the OWFL in 1997. It is the first time ever players from the OWFL that comprise Team Ontario will have the opportunity to compete for a National Championship. This is a tremendous opportunity for the OWFL and for our league's top U19 players. Prior to the OWFL, a National Championship ran from 1983 – 1997 with British Columbia winning for 11 straight years from 1983 – 1993 and then Ontario claiming the title from 1994 – 1997.
With a National Championship being re-introduced, it is a chance for our top players to compete and gain valuable experience at the National level, while working toward the goal of winning the first National Championship since 1997. This National event will no doubt provide elite level players from Ontario, B.C., Alberta and First Nations a valuable opportunity for development and identification as future Team Canada / National Team players.
We are thrilled with the recent announcement of Team Ontario U19 Head Coach, Tami Rayner who acted as Assistant Coach of Canada’s U19 World Championship team. Coach Rayner’s wealth of experience and knowledge, and passion for working with and developing elite level players will be invaluable to our OWFL players entering the Provincial Team program. Please watch for the notice, in the next few days, from Team Ontario on specific details regarding the registration process, tryout dates, times, locations, cost etc.
We would anticipate with the level of play and the depth of talent throughout the OWFL that tryouts will be very competitive with the result being a very talented U19 Team Ontario competing for the 2016 National Title.
