Cecil County Library - Elkton Branch
PAWS is thrilled to renew its partnership with the Cecil County Library, Elkton Branch. Reading sessions will be offered on Saturday mornings and/or Tuesday evenings throughout the summer.
Saint Francis Healthcare
This site recently partnered with PAWS to offer pet therapy to their surgical patients. PAWS team Sue Spelecki & Rudy were the first to visit there in February with teams Carol Lutrell & Araby and Mary Ellen Dunn & Billy joining soon after! Located in downtown Wilmington, Saint Francis is hoping to expand its program hospital-wide in the near future and recently had a presentation for its nursing staff on the benefits of pet therapy.

A Proud Pet-Therapy Team |

Mickey & Jen after their first visit at Cooper Hospital. |
"Therapy Dog" was not my intention for Mickey when we started obedience and agility classes at Zoom Room. Mickey was a stray puppy with a broken leg rescued by the Animal Coalition of Delaware County. When I adopted him he was a rambunctious puppy who needed training and socialization. He barked at the other dogs through his entire first obedience class. We kept going back. Slowly, I watched this crazy little dog learn how to control himself. Then I started noticing how people smiled at him on our daily walks/jogs and realized that he was meant to be more than just a fun loving pup. He was meant to bring smiles to people. Zoom Room introduced us to PAWS for People through a Therapy Dog workshop we took... and here we are now, a proud Pet Therapy Team!

Kibble for Thought |

When a dog scratches, owners often scratch too! We scratch our head wondering what's causing our dog to itch. Is it
fleas? Does he have a skin irritation? Maybe
allergies?
Any of the above can cause your dog to becoming itchy, resulting in some scratching.
Stress, frustration, or excitement can also cause a dog to scratch. It's highly unlikely there's actually an itch related to the scratching at this moment, rather it's a displaced behavior.

Sophie Works to Get Back to Work |
|
Sophie, Thom Rowan's therapy companion, is currently on medical leave from visiting, recovering from TPLO surgery. (TPLO stands for tibial-plateau-leveling osteotomy and it is performed on dogs to stabilize the stifle joint - same as an ACL repair for humans.)
Thom recently updated the PAWS office:
Sophie is doing well and has been receiving hydrotherapy once a week. Here she is pictured using the underwater treadmill in the Hydrotherapy tank. When they do TPLO surgery, they perform an Epidural. If you look closely, you can see a shaved spot on her back just up from her tail, this is where they did the Epidural. This should be a good source of curiosity and questions for the kids when she returns to visiting at Nemours. The physical therapist thinks she is ahead of the recovery curve. Because of that opinion, we are hoping the surgeon will loosen her restrictions enough to go back to work, maybe on light duty. I truly think she misses her visits and I know I do.
Keep up the good work on that treadmill, Sophie! We know there are lots of pets for you whenever you are ready to return!
