It Ain_t So Awful_ Falafel
Miss Shayna recommends It Ain't So Awful, Falafel by Firoozeh Dumas

Cindy's real name is Zomorod, but who has ever heard of a girl with a weird name like that? When her family moves from Iran to California in 1978 Cindy just wants to worry about normal 11 year old girl stuff, like making new friends, joining girl scouts, and working hard in school. But when politics in Iran begin to make U.S. headlines Cindy begins to feel outcast. What makes this book so good is the excellent balance of relatable middle school realistic fiction and the easy to understand descriptions of history. This book explains the events that led up to the current situation in Iran in such a simple and natural way you won't even realize you are learning about history. Best of all you will learn to empathize with a likable character by seeing life through her point of view. It Ain't So Awful, Falalfel by Firoozeh Dumas stands out on the shelf because it covers a subject I haven't read about in other middle grade books.
