PHILIP R. WILLMARTH VIDEO TRIBUTE

It has been one year since the passing of one of our most esteemed members, Philip Reed Willmarth. Please visit this touching video tribute to the man we all loved and looked to for guidance and smiles.

Philip Reed Willmarth (8/19/1931 - 9/16/2014) known as 'Big Dad' by all his grandchildren, was my uncle and through him, I was able to experience the wonderful world of magic. This video captures moments from his memorial service weekend held in Durham NC at the end of September 2014. My favorite childhood memories of him are from when I joined him and his son John at numerous magic conventions where I was able to watch some of the best magicians in the world up close and with unrestricted access. His life passion was magic and he was a believer that magic should always be entertaining. He was a husband, father, grandfather, friend and mentor. The thumbnail image for this video is a collection of thousands of individual images of him which was made into a self-portrait art piece and later used for his 2007 Linking Ring cover.

Professionally, he was a magician, magic historian, lecturer, author and editor, who was a past president of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and, for many years, the editor of The Linking Ring, the most widely distributed monthly publication on magic. He was awarded a Literary Fellowship from the Academy of Magical Arts in 2007 and had a personal library of 6,000+ magic books; perhaps the largest in the world. His own magical area of expertise was working with rings and ropes.

He joined the International Brotherhood of Magicians in 1969, serving as international president from 2007 to 2008. He served as assistant editor of The Linking Ring from 1978 to 1992, executive editor from 1992 to 2007 and appeared on its cover three times (1981, 2007, 2014). He wrote numerous books, including "The Magic of Matt Schulien" (1959), "Fun With a Handkerchief" (1969), "The Ring and Rope Book" (1975), "Jim Ryan Close-up" (four volumes, 1980-81), "The Knot Collector" (1989) and "The Impostress Princess Expanded" (2011). He also published other authors' books.

His remains were interred at Lakeside Cemetery in Colon, MI in August 2015. He is survived by his second wife, Frances "Robbie"; a daughter, Janet; a son, John; a stepdaughter, Lelia Neil; a stepson, Eldridge Gray; and 11 grandchildren. His first wife, Anne Sallaway, died in 1985.

This video was produced using all Apple products by Donald Icabalceta Roberts with the approval of and feedback from his wife Robbie and son John. I didn't know I was going to create this video when I attended his memorial weekend and regret not having more footage of the Willmarth family in it. The inspiration came from the song "Change" which was released in mid-October 2014.

MAGIC IN CLASSIC TELEVISION
Fans of the 1960's sitcom Mister Ed might be interested to know that Episode 15 of Season 4, titled Shish Kebab, originally aired on 19 January 1964, featured a prominent magic cast. The comedy series featured Mister Ed, a talking horse, and his owner Wilbur Post, played by popular radio star Alan Young.

The program's head writer, Lou Derman, was an accomplished magician and author of the book, Add Comedy to your Act. He took every opportunity to include magic into his scripts for such programs as I Love Lucy, All in the Family, Good Times, and Mister Ed. In the case of Mister Ed, he gave Wilbur an interest in magic as a hobby.

In this episode, Wilbur has entered a contest at the convention of the Society of American Magicians held in San Francisco that year. What is notable about this episode is the appearance of Harry Blackstone doing his Vanishing Bird Cage, silk-to-cane, and Botania. Dick Zimmerman is entered in the contest performing his original "Ring and Rope" routine. Lou Derman performs the Cups and Balls. The episode also included assorted audience shots of the convention attendees and several shots of the SAM logo on the stage.

Wilbur performs his "Spears Through the Horse" with Ed, all played for laughs. It was nice, though, to see the Great Blackstone as a special guest, and Dick Zimmerman's "Ring and Rope" routine is a nice effect, although he runs into a little trouble with it. Maybe the editor decided that since this was about a magic contest, leaving in the glitsch with the rope.

This episode recently aired on ME TV, the classic cable television channel and is available on Mister Ed collector DVD sets.

These two men have created a magnificent series of video magic lessons that every member of our fraternity will find useful. This is an incredible opportunity and I.B.M. member benefit! Hello, Everyone,

We had a nice little group this past Friday: Mike & Pattie G., Virginia O. , Steven P., Austin L., Robbie Willmarth (WELCOME, ROBBIE) and me. We all enjoyed some good magic and some good discussions. Steven did an effect about his "Grandfather's Clock" in preparation for a discussion and demonstration of the Prophesy Move and some variations of it. He also performed a variation of a poker routine from one of Phil Willmarth;s books, The Impostress Mistress. He repeated a cool trick from a few weeks ago where the name of a thought-of card appeared on the backs of 3 separate one dollar bills. Austin did a couple of 4-Ace routines. He magically produced the four aces in one routine and in the other he made the four Aces reverse themselves in the deck. Mike demonstrated a neat handling of the Prophesy Move. He also "took" a course in magic in which each Ace was cut to magically. We all had a good time. We will be at Sweet Tomatoes on Friday.

Hope to see you all on Friday of THIS week  at our favorite table this Friday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Cary Crossroads Sweet Tomatoes!
