Our nation's founding fathers established the federal government which sets order and passes laws all citizens must follow. Whether we agree with the rules or not, we must abide by them or face the consequences.
As church leaders, we must ensure God's house also runs orderly, especially as it relates to finances. Having a budget and a financial reporting structure in place leads to order and efficiency. As far as we're concerned, it should be mandatory to operate our churches with a spirit of excellence.
There are some basic practical and spiritual things to consider in handling church finances properly:
- Pray for God's guidance.
- Set up a budget to allow the church to operate with integrity and fairness.
- Establish regular dates to provide financial accountability with financial reports to the church membership.
Any differences of opinion over finances should be handled biblically. "Be ready for very good work, to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men" (Titus 3:1-2). Understandably, things will get off track now and then. However, do your best to keep God's house running in a way that will make him pleased.
