THE BEWITCHING OF THE LYCE

SPANISH STYLE

Class of '96 Alumna Leilah Broukhim

Class of '96 alumna Leilah Broukhim completely mesmerized the 282 people who attended her Flamenco performance at the LFNY Cultural Center on October 21, 2014. Leilah had developed this performance especially for the Lyce.  She titled the show Embruj, which means bewitched; and she must have known the effect it was going to have on the audience, because everyone in the audience was spellbound by every step, every gyration, every movement that Leilah made as she practically burned a hole into the stage with series after series of deft and impassioned choreography.

Leilah hand-picked each musician for the show, particularly renowned pianist Pablo Rubn Maldonado, who flew in from Madrid for the performance; and San Francisco-based singer Jos Corts, whose haunting voice played both seducer and antagonizer to Leilah's enflamed protagonist.  The hypnotic percussions and twirling Spanish guitar melodies that accompanied Mr. Maldonado and Mr. Corts created the perfect dramatic backdrop for an unforgettable performance.

The evening was also an unprecedented moment for the Alumni Program, as Embruj attracted the largest attendance for an alumni event since the alumni program was established.  After the show, what was supposed to be an intimate alumni reception that was to be held for Classes '96, '97 and '98 turned into a lively Flamenco after party, with all of the performers accompanying Leilah to greet her alumni classmates.  There were also a number of parents and LFNY staff members who found their way into the party.  After all was said and done, it was a night to remember for LFNY, its Cultural Center and the alumni program.

THE LYCE MOURNS THE PASSING OF PIERRE DE FERRY DE FONTNOUVELLE

The Lyce Franais de New York mourns the passing of Pierre de Ferry de Fontnouvelle (1919-2014), son of the Lyce's founder, Charles de Ferry de Fontnouvelle. Pierre passed away at his home in Chevy Chase, Maryland on

October 16.

Pierre was instrumental in supporting his father's legacy at the Lyce, spearheading a campaign at the school in 2006 to have an historic bust of his father placed prominently in the lobby of our building. "At the threshold of the third millennium," he wrote in the 2001 inaugural issue of LFNY Magazine, "we can be certain that the school remains faithful to its tradition of humanism, while being resolutely open to the world of tomorrow".

The oldest of three children, Pierre was unable to attend the Lyce by the time it was founded in 1935, but the vision his father had for all Lyce students was very much represented in the life of Pierre, a global citizen of great humanity, curiosity and broad interests. He was born in the United Kingdom and grew up in Portugal, France and the U.S. He served the U.S. and later France during World War II and had a career in both public service and business, working for the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund and IT&T.  He translated over a dozen of books on myriad topics, including a biography of the French dramatist and diplomat Paul Claudel.

His younger brother, Charles, graduated from the Lyce in 1943 and served the French Army during World War II. He was killed in combat in 1944. His sister, Anne-Rene de Fontnouvelle Stastny, graduated from the Lyce in 1954 and lives in Dallas, Texas. Pierre is also survived by his son Patrick and daughter-in-law Nathalie of Boston and three beloved grandchildren - Christina, Victor and Marc.

A memorial service for Pierre was held in Washington, DC on Tuesday, October 21.

Donations can be made in Pierre's memory to the Lyce Franais de New York. Please contact Ashley Kaufman at akaufman@lfny.org for more information.
