Alumni Updates Header 2
July 16, 2015 - Vol. 3, No. 4

Dear LFNY Alumni,

As summer is in full swing, we hope you all find yourselves enjoying wonderful weather wherever you may be! While the students are away, the Lycée wheels keep on turning and particularly so as we plan a key alumni event on August 8. Be sure to scroll down for more information.

To alumni--both new and old--we miss you, and can't wait to see you back here again this year!

Bien à vous,

L'Hermione  while she docked in New York City in early July.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Marc Jensen ('76) Makes a Particular Atlantic Crossing
Marc Jensen

Engineer by trade, LFNY alumnus Marc Jensen recently cast off this title in favor of L'Hermione's wooden decks. A full-scale replica of the Marquis de Lafayette's historic ship was completed this past year and has since traversed the Atlantic and is making its way up the eastern seaboard.

Fifth grader Yasmeen Kassem-Scott (2023) interviewed Marc about the experience for the LFNY Blog. She and her classmates spent the year learning all about L'Hermione and her times with research projects and a June field trip to tour the ship in Alexandria, Virginia. We hope you had the chance to visit L'Hermione while she was docked in New York City.

Joanna Macy ('47) Returned to School with Lessons for Peace
Joanna Macy (third from right) visited the Lycée as part of the Hibakusha Project

On April 29, 2015, LFNY students of the première were honored to welcome back Joanna Macy ('47), who joined Dr. Arthur Plaza, LFNY parent Véronique Christory of International Committee of the Red Cross and speakers from Hibakusha Stories, an oral history project that aims to educate students about the dangers of nuclear warfare through stories of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and their aftermath. During the moving panel discussion, Nagasaki survivor Yasuaki Yamshita recounted his narrow escape from death. Joanna then shared her experience learning of the disaster as a then-Lycée student on summer holiday, a memory that has shaped both her disposition and life choices.

On May 16, LFNY graduates of many classes congregated at The Gordon Bar at 60 Thompson Street in downtown Manhattan for cocktails and conversation. Old friends once again had the pleasure of seeing one another and also to meet the alumni of the numerous other classes.

LFNY NEWS

"Passeurs de Cultures" - Graduation 2015

Graduating students heard counsel (and much humor) in speeches from each other, and also from Head of School Sean Lynch, French Consul General Bernard Lortholary, and advisor-teachers David Soquet and Margaret George during a moving graduation ceremony on June 11 at the 92nd Street Y. York Wing Update
Light shines through as workers remove the roof at 1416 York Avenue.

Since February, construction teams have been gutting 1416 York Avenue, which will become home to the school's new York Wing, a 19,000 sq-ft extension to house new collaborative spaces, a media lab, and maker space for students, among much more. Work continues on through the summer with a new steel core, flooring and beginnings of a new facade. In short, we're on track for the grand opening in September 2016. Mark your calendars...
