Happy New Year!

Our batteries are recharged and we are raring to go in 2014. We hope the same is true for you! A big piece of work coming up for AOZWI is implementing the Athens Hocking Zero Waste Action Plan which was completed in December. Many partners participated in the process, while keeping all of their own good work going, too.

Read about the good work of our partners below: organizing reuse competitions for cash prizes, planting hundreds of trees, and involving school kids in waste audits

We can't wait to see what we can accomplish together in 2014. Don't forget to share your stories and pictures with us. We'd like to include them in this bi-monthly newsletter.

Athens Hocking
Zero Waste Action Plan Finished!

The members and partners of The Appalachia Ohio Zero Waste Initiative (AOZWI) are excited to announce the completion of the Athens Hocking Zero Waste Action Plan. The action plan, completed in December, aims to provide a unified vision and pathway for a robust waste management system that will enable Athens and Hocking counties to work to create a zero waste economy.

ReUse Industries launches a ReUse Competition

ReUse Industries is launching a ReUse Competition to support the development of new products made from waste stream materials. "Waste is such a huge, untapped resource for innovation and wealth creation in Appalachia Ohio," says Zachary Holl, Executive Director of ReUse. "The competition is just one way that ReUse Industries seeks to support innovators and others using their making and fixing talents to give otherwise wasted materials a new life."

A total of $3,000 in cash prizes will be awarded for the best artistic and best functional products. Youth and adults in all 32 Ohio Appalachian counties are eligible to enter. March 14th is the "intent to enter" deadline, with submissions due by April 1st.

See more details including judging criteria at The ReUse Industries website.

Recycling Education
in Perry County

Katrina Carpenter is the Education Specialist at Perry County Waste Reduction & Recycling. While she works with all age groups - hosting various workshops and outreach programs - it is her work with area youth that she finds most exciting. Currently Katrina is overseeing three educational programs at local schools: a Waste Reduction Challenge, a compost experiment, and a 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle' Rap Contest.

Opportunity for Growth in

Southeast Ohio Recycling Industry

This research is beginning to help us understand the economic impact of primary and secondary feedstock recycling, estimate the number of jobs created by primary processors and secondary users of recycled feedstock, and identify markets for recycled material.

Rural Action, the Appalachian Partnership for Economic Growth, and Resource Recycling Systems worked together to identify existing businesses in southeast Ohio that process recycled feedstock, or use recycled feedstock to manufacture new products.

Rural Action's goal is to connect supply chain actors to one another to increase resource recovery and economic development. If you know of a business that is processing or using recycled feedstock, let us know.
