| Current Cyber Threats Ransomware is on the rise. We have received this alert from many organizations including the FBI. These are typically distributed through spoofed email with an attachment that contains malicious code. Remember these three things:
- Treat attachments as suspect until are certain it is genuine.
- Be certain the message is truly from the person you expect. (Try clicking reply to the message as see if the actual address changes to one you do not recognize).
- Are you expecting to receive an attachment from this person? Is it supposed to be a Word file or PDF?
Generally consider the attachment is a threat until you have verified it is from the person you expect and in the file type expected. If uncertain, simply call the person to verify. Phishing campaigns run with the seasons. We see fake shipping notices over the holidays and now with tax season upon us there are many fraudulent requests for PI (personal information). There a fake emails circulating that appear to represent the IRS and others with spoofed email addresses requesting your W-2. Be cautious and always make certain you verify the sender. This is especially the case in personal email since those accounts typically do not have the enterprise level pre-screening as we provide for corporate email accounts.
- The IRS recently disabled their online PIN retrieval system due to a high number of fraudulent tax returns.
- Landry's released information regarding a breach in the point of sale systems and at Neiman Marcus reported a breach of their online sites.
Spread the word and inform your friends and family to also exercise caution especially when dealing with your own personal information! |
