Thursdays April 7 - June 2
Beginner 4 - 5 pm
Advanced 5 - 6 pm

Children in grades 1-7 are invited to join the Children's Department's Chess Club instructed by Christopher Potts!
Christopher Potts has taught over four hundred students over sixteen years as a scholastic chess instructor.  He has been a tournament player for more than thirty years and has several years experience as a US Chess Federation certified tournament director.  Mr. Potts has also served on the board of the Connecticut State Chess Association.

Those brand new to chess will learn:
      - The history and rules of the game
      - Basic checkmate themes and patterns
      - Basic strategy and tactics
Advanced students will:
      - Review the basics
      - Learn more advanced strategy and tactics
      - Learn optimal opening and endgame play
      - Gain an appreciation for the vital importance of making and carrying out sound plans

Time will be provided for students to play games and put the classroom lessons into practice.  The most important lesson is that chess is a pastime that can develop the mind and provide a lifetime of fun!

Program fee is $80 per student for all eight meetings, for children in grades 1-7.  Please note- chess will not meet on Thursday, April 14th due to Spring vacation.  Call 203-762-6336 or come in to register.  Payment due at time of registration.

The Wonderful Things You Will Be
Miss Jane recommends The Wonderful Things You Will Be by Emily Winfield Martin

"When I look at you and you look at me, I wonder what wonderful things you will be." So begins Emily Winfield Martin's hopeful, heart-swelling ode to children and all their infinite potential. The Wonderful Things You Will Be captures in rhyme the awe parents feel as they watch their children grow. Martin manages not to sound preachy as she delivers a message of unconditional love. The illustrations have a vintage look; muted colors give the story a warm, nostalgic feel. Throughout, we are reminded -- and uplifted -- by the sheer joy of possibilities. Delightful!
