MARCH 2016 RING REPORT
Ring 199's Friday magic luncheon meetings are facilitated by Danny Reeves.  During the meetings, several discussions were centered on sleights (i.e. timing, the mechanics, and the need to do sleights in the first place).  Danny Reeves performed the effect "Spectator Finds Your Card" (from Jerry Mentzer's book "Simple Yet Effective Tricks with Cards") so well, it was as if Reeves had written the book!  Additionally, Reeves performed a bullet card trick and an indicator card effect.  Kevin Reylek did a Ted Lesley effect where a card was randomly removed from the deck by a spectator.  Reylek then fanned through the deck and was able to determine the missing card.  Xan Innes performed a card effect in which a spectator's chosen card vanished from the deck and appeared in a wallet.  Innes also did an excellent effect on how to fake honesty.  The attendees however are still scratching their heads trying to figure out if Innes' spiel was sincere.  Mike Gorman's performance of the now venerable routine "A Charming Chinese Challenge"(originated by Troy Hoosier) was done so flawlessly that Hoosier himself would have been proud of Gorman's homage to him. Gorman's performances of other routines (including a two-card prediction effect, an oil and water effect, a lucky card routine, the magic square, the calendar force, and a rubber band trick) earned Gorman a round of much deserved applause.  Steven Perry performed Michael Skinner's bridge deal.  Perry also did double card transpositions, and performed a routine wherein he vanished three coins. Rick DeNatale did a little comical routine wherein a miniature hand appeared from his cupped hands and stole a bottle cap.

In the regular March 2016 meeting Tony Baro's original routine (called "Quantum Entanglement") was hilarious.  In this routine Baro mixed a flurry of mathematical patter with good sleights to produce a spectator's face up card in a deck of face down cards.  Kerry LeBlanc (a.k.a. "Kingman") was instated as a new member of Ring 199.  LeBlanc was very adept with his handling of cards and showed everybody that he was "worthy" of being a club member.  LeBlanc's had two spectators choose two cards at random.  With impeccable sleight of hand, LeBlanc managed to use 4 aces to find the spectators' cards.  Matt Brockman proved once again that he is indeed a master of card manipulation.  Brockman had a spectator shuffle a deck of cards while holding the cards under a table.  One card was then removed by the spectator from the deck, flipped over, and put back in the deck.  Although the spectator never showed the cards, Brockman was able to name the card after he had concentrated for a few seconds.
Fred Rosenbaum's original routine (entitled "Funeral Sampler") gets better and better.  In this (paradoxically humorously morbid) routine, Rosenbaum was able to predict the total cost of a funeral although the prices of each funeral item had been randomly selected by several spectators from different funeral brochures.
Upcoming events:  AUCTION - April 2, 2016.  FAMILY FLING (contests, etc.) - May 7, 2016.

Ring 199 normally meets on the first Saturday of the month.  The exceptions for the remainder of  2016 will be July 9th and September 10th.

MAGIC YOUTH RALEIGH

Five youth members met at The Magic Corner to begin working through each chapter of the Tarbell Magic Course. Lessons #1 and #2 were assigned as homework. We began with Lesson #3, Sleight of Hand with Coins. Each student received a Kennedy Half Dollar coin and several half-dollar size clay poker chips to practice palms, holds, steals, vanishes, and changes. Dan Harlan's excellent video Tarbell Lesson #3 (available from Penguin Magic) was used to supplement the lesson. Students were assigned the homework of practicing the slights taught. The March 26th lesson will cover Tarbell Lesson #4, Coin Tricks.

Roger Way, Youth Director

Hi, Everyone,

We had a pretty large group this past Friday. In attendance were: Virginia O., Rick D., Mike & Pattie G., Xan I., Kevin R., Steven P., Danny Hinton (a cucumber, uh, I mean, a new comer. WELCOME, Danny! Glad to have you as part of our group.) and me. We engaged in some great magical discussions and saw some good magic. I did a couple of card effects: "Truth or Lie" and the "Pistol Card Trick." Mike demonstrated a "Poker Deal" effect and a card effect based upon simple math. Kevin did a "Lucky Card" routine based on an Al Koran effect. Xan did a GREAT memorized deck routine that led into Paul Curry's "Out of This World," sometimes called the best card trick in the world. Steven performed Michael Skinner's effect, "Red Fibers From a $20 Bill." He learned it from Skinner's audio tapes. There was a lot of magic discussions going on with Rick and Xan, with input by the rest of the lunchers. We all had a lot of fun. We will not meet this Friday, March 25th due to the Easter holiday. Have a wonderful Easter an we'll see you next week!

HELP!  CARD MAGICIAN NEEDED
The Magic Youth Group is still searching for one or two accomplished card magicians to oversee the intermediate to advanced card magic classes on a consistent monthly basis. These classes have been discontinued due to the lack of a dedicated mentor or mentor team.

This mentor may set his own schedule to meet with the card kids at either The Magic Corner Magic Shop or prior to the monthly Ring meetings at New Horizons Fellowship.

The General and Beginner Magic Classes are still taught by Skip Way on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month, 6:00-8:00 PM at The Magic Corner.

Please contact Skip Way at [email protected] if you are interested in assuming responsibility for the card magic classes.

HOUDINI SPEAKS
Houdini's last radio interview, just before his untimely death on October 31, 2016. A radio announcer broadcasts a real-life interview, of Houdini, then flashes back on his amazing career.

HOUDINI TALKS HOUDINI is the title of a new exciting experimental micro, short-film showcasing Houdini's legendary amazing life. It was released online on March 24, 2016, Houdini's 142nd birthday. The film is produced, written  and directed, by filmmaker and magician, Adam Steinfeld.

The film is edited in 3 segments. The first segment opens with Houdini's own words, highlighting his amazing true life adventures. These digital images were released through the New York Public Library.

When modern audiences visualize Houdini it is through fictionalized accounts with Hollywood actors. "This is the real Houdini", said director Steinfeld. "I've made every effort to keep Houdini real as accurately as possible. I have inserted a bit of dramatic licensing; adding sound and a music score for the internet generation, instead of the silent piano film music of that period".

Part two and Part three of HOUDINI, TALKS HOUDINI showcases real film of Houdini's spectacular stunts. These were shot on May 7, 1907 and in the spring and summer of 1914 at the Weighlock bridge on Court Street in downtown Rochester, New York. This found footage was made possible through the Library of Congress, and the Eastman Museum.

Filmmaker Adam Steinfeld edited the 100-year-old footage with a dramatic contemporary score and an omnipresent voice-over by Kelly Cordes. Houdini's voice is by Gergo' Benedek speaking in English with Hungarian voice characterization to replicate an old radio show.

Steinfeld is also co-author of the novel, Houdini Lives! In this short-film he brings together two of his passions; magic performed live on stage and film-making. This film brings combined artistic, dramatic, and thrilling real life footage. These photos and segments have rarely been combine a compressed look back at the greatest magician, escape artist and dare devil that ever lived.
