Chag Purim Sameach!

Save the Date for the 2016 Ner Tamid:
Tuesday, May 17, 2016
This year's Ner Tamid will be held on  Tuesday, May 17th  at The Bushnell Theater. The Gala will honor the Rosenberg, Rosenberg Toro and Bricker families for their commitment and dedication to Solomon Schechter Day School and the Greater Hartford Community. Schechter parent Leah Berson will receive the Excellence in Volunteerism Award for her outstanding service to Schechter. There will also be a Tribute Journal, which is in the process of being created.

If you would like to take part in the Tribute Journal, forms are available in the school office and on-line starting Wenesday. Additionally, your support in soliciting businesses in the area to  contribute to the journal would be greatly appreciated. The Tribute Journal will be on-line again this year in an effort to be green. Contributions to the journal are tax-deductible.

The event will feature CATAPULT. This dance troupe came in second place on NBC's America's Got Talent and is sure to amaze everyone with their shadow dancing.

For more information or questions regarding this year's event please contact Jayne Rotter, Director of Institutional Advancement in the main office at (860) 561-0700.

Students in Grades 3, 4, and 5 Take a Fresh Look at the Purim Story

In relation to the Purim story, students in third grade discussed the meaning of the quote, "Being brave doesn't mean not being afraid. It means being afraid but doing it anyway." They applied this statement to Esther and Mordecai and attributed this definition of bravery to the Jewish people. The students then nominated characters for bravery awards. Alex Patt noted that, "Achashverosh was brave. He knew he was weak leader and he surrounding himself with advisors to help him rule." Jeremy Eisen nominated Vashti because "Even though she knew something bad was going to happen to her, she told the king that she would not show off at his party."

Fourth graders focused on heroism in their study of Purim this year.  After learning about the story, students studied the actions of Esther and Mordecai, who stood up for their beliefs and did the right thing in the face of mortal danger. After the discussion, the students chose three people whom they admire and wrote how and why they aspired to be like their heroes. Besides her parents and grandparents, Miriam Newman chose Taylor Swift because she tells her fans to never give up. Like her parents, Miriam said, "I want to be brave and encourage my children to enrich their learning."  In writing how she would like to be like her heroes, Ava Leshem wrote, "When I have kids, I will care for them like my parents take care of me. I want to be like my teachers because I want to be as smart as them and they encourage me to keep trying."  Serena van der Hulst wrote that she would like to be like her sister, Alex because, "I'd like to be strong like her."  She also added that she would like to be like her grandmother who was smart and always encouraged her.

After studying about the story of Esther, fifth grade students were asked to brainstorm some lessons that they learned from the megillah. They generated a two page document filled with Big Ideas,  summarizing important ideas that are central to a discipline and have lasting value beyond the classroom. For example, Harris Berson suggested that "everyone in the world has a purpose." Molly Lerner added, "Don't judge a person by the outside. However a person looks like on the outside, they can still have a lev tov (good heart)."  David Wolf noted, "If you don't ever make a decision and just stand by and watch, it's as bad as doing something bad."  Maya Patt stated, "Like Mordecai, one person can make a difference."

1st Graders are Over the Rainbow
Last week, students in first grade learned about the formation of rainbows and how sunlight is filtered through the water in the air. For their experiment, the students put varying amounts of sugar into four different cups. Then, they added food coloring in the same shades as a rainbow. They put three drops of water into each cup. Students witnessed actual layers of colors forming in the cups because of the density of the water.
Alex Weinstein said, "This is so cool! I can see how rainbows are made."
