Updates and Reminders

We're three months into the new year and thrilled to see the amazing grant applications coming in! As a friendly reminder, all community organizations are required to submit a success story and complete the grant survey once your funded event/program has completed.

Why complete your success story? Well, the ParticipACTION team loves hearing about the amazing programs happening across the country - and it helps us connect and inspires other community organizations! In addition, completing your success story and grant recipient survey makes you eligible to apply for future funding!

Success Story
Active After School - Cormack, NL

Teens devoted 8 weeks of fall after school hours, 2 hours one day a week , to coordinating a variety of sport programs for themselves and kids ages 9-12. Sports included: frisbee, ball hockey, dodgeball, softball, volleyball, pinball, badminton, soccer, bocci, basketball and fun relays. It was a great way to keep everyone active after school and gain leadership skills too.

Success Story
Golden Youth experience Perfect Parkour - British Columbia

As defined by www.oxforddictionaries.com, parkour is the activity or sport of moving rapidly through an area, typically in an urban environment, negotiating obstacles by running, jumping, and climbing.

In the Fall of 2015, a joint initiative between the Golden Family Center, Golden Youth Center and Kicking Horse Gymnastics Club, allowed youth to participate in the Perfect Parkour program. Parkour is an art of movement that shares many elements with gymnastics. It is a wonderful way of moving over, under and through obstacles, using your momentum to keep going. The group held six sessions at the gymnastics club, where the gymnastics coach instructed participants in warm-ups and different rotations around different axis. Safety was also an important part of the program, and the coach made sure we all used safe landings and proper technique to avoid injury.

ParticipACTION Teen Challenge funds were used to lower the registration fee ($130 full cost!) for participants, who otherwise would not have been able to participate. The teens were appreciative and had a great time!

Do you have a teen success story that you would like to share?
Send it to Carla at physicalactivity@recreationnl.com and be featured in the next bi-monthly e-news.
