Looking back over 2015, I am surprised at the accomplishments of this neighborhood. But why am I surprised? This is the neighborhood that established a neighborhood preservation zone, planted signs in their yards, created water basins, planted trees, held visuals, raised over 35 k, and gave hours and hours of volunteer time over 9 years to obtain historic status.
But it seems the challenges just keep coming, and 2016 will be an even more challenging year. For the Grant Road widening, homes have been, and will be, demolished, residents relocated, and others are already worried about their property values. How will the noise and visual intrusion be handled? Strong, safe, urban core neighborhoods are important to the city of Tucson and it is in the best interest of the entire community to safeguard these neighborhoods. In the pressure cooker of city projects and funding issues it is up to residents to remind everyone of the long term effects of their actions today.
I believe Jefferson Park neighbors will work through the association and the Friends non-profit toward the common good. And, we are not alone. Strong bonds are being formed. We are building stronger alliances with our nearby neighborhoods. SAMOS, Campbell/Grant and Catalina Vista are working together on the Grant Road Coalition-Central segments. I have met some wonderful "other" neighbors.
I have great hopes for this neighborhood where I have lived for over 25 years and which educated my children in elementary school and at the U of A. Sometimes I yearn for the "good ole days" but even as I fear for the coming years, I also see great possibilities for the future. I hope you do also. It will take some work.
