In case you missed it,  a Comet known as P/2016 BA14 flew within 2.2 million miles of Earth this morning, making it the closest comet to fly past the planet since 1770. Fortunately, you don't have to wait 246 years between issues of the e-Pulse, though some might be willing to give it a try.
Dr. Glass Receives NIH Grant; Application Ranks in top 1%
Karen Glass, an assistant professor in the Dept. of Pharmaceutical Sciences on the Vermont Campus, has received a $384,000 research grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). That is an impressive achievement in its own right, but Dr. Glass took it one step further by achieving a score of "10" on her grant application. That's the highest score one can receive and places her in the top 1% of all grants scored by NIH! Through the grant, Dr. Glass will continue her research of bromodomains, which are small protein modules contained within larger protein structures. Bromodomains play a critical role in the body by influencing the expression of genes in our cells. These interactions drive a range of biological processes, which can include the onset or advancement of a variety of disease states. The influence bromodomains have on disease makes them desirable targets for new drug development.
Students Help Draft New
Guidelines for Liquid Medications

A resolution drafted by the College's chapters of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA-ASP) has been adopted as policy by the organization. The new policy - which was approved by the APhA House of Delegates at their Annual Meeting earlier this month - details new guidelines for the labeling and measuring of oral liquid medications. The focus of the guidelines is a recommendation to move away from the use of teaspoons and dosing cups labeled in ounces in favor of oral syringes and cups that use milliliters. The adoption of the metric system as the standard for prescribing and measuring all oral liquid medications is seen as a way to cut down on the dosing and measurement confusion that can more easily result from the use of historical standards of measure.  The need for such a policy is evidenced by the fact that numerous and sometimes fatal events have occurred as a result of incorrectly dosed medications. Students from both the College's Albany and Vermont Campuses contributed to the writing and advancement of the measure.
Vermont Students Bring Hope to Cancer Patients and Families
For some time now, the Vermont Campus Chapter of Colleges Against Cancer has been preparing monthly dinners at The Hope Lodge in Burlington. Following their most recent visit, the Lodge posted this message on its Facebook page: "Thank you for dinner Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences! Still remember the introduction we made with you a couple of years ago with guest speaker, Lily. Her heart would be so happy to know you're still here giving comfort!" The post has generated 69 likes! Hope Lodge provides free temporary housing and support services for patients and families traveling for outpatient cancer treatments.
New B.S. in Public Health to Begin Enrolling Students in Fall
It was announced last week that the College has received approval from the New York State Education Department to offer a Bachelor's Degree program in Public Health. Students will be eligible to enroll in the new program beginning in fall 2016. The Public Health program represents the evolution of the College's current B.S. program in Health and Human Sciences (HHS). Whereas HHS placed an emphasis on the basic sciences, the Public Health program will expand the focus to integrate coursework in areas that include social science, applied science, epidemiology, statistics, and research. All students enrolled in the HHS program as of fall 2016 (including incoming freshmen) will be able to continue in that program through their graduation. HHS students will also have the option of transferring into the B.S. in Public Health program. To learn more, visit the Public Health web page.
Africana Film Series Returns
for 12th Year
Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences will host its 12th annual Africana Film Series featuring films selected by Associate Professor of Africana Studies Kevin Hickey. This year's theme is "Love and Relations in Africa."  The series will take place on three consecutive Tuesdays - March 22, March 29, and April 5. All films will begin at 7:00 pm and be shown in Room 201 of the Gozzo Student Center. On the series' first night, Dr. Hickey will begin by showing an image-film documenting his four year bike trip across Africa. The entire series is free and open to the public. Pizza will also be provided each night for attendees. Visit the Film Series web page   to view a list of this year's films .

Of all the mysteries in the universe, one of the biggest may be how the astronomy community couldn't come up with a catchier name than P/2016 BA14.
